ive got the first ever holiday for just me and dh booked for next year - its a year away, but Turkey borders Syria....as DH keeps reminding me. i think he is worrying about the IS threat.

Are people still happy to travel to Turkey? What is the official advice?

thanks

I'm sure plenty of people are still travelling to Turkey but look on the Foreign Office website and register for travel updates for the official advice. We've just cancelled a holiday to Jordan which also borders Syria and Iraq.

People are absolutely still going to Turkey. The Turkish resorts are on the Western side of the country and the borders with Syria and Iraq are in the East. If you were to drive there it is almost 1,000 miles away and would take you 24 hours. To put it into perspective that is about the same distance as London to Prague!

My husband's family live about 100 miles away from the border in Eastern Turkey and there is no trouble even that close.

Tell your husband not worry and show him a map of Turkey so he can see what a big country it is and that you will be very far form the borders.

I would happily go on a plane to Turkey tomorrow if I could.

We're going in 4 weeks' time! Just booked our e-visas today Grin

Not worrying about it - no point - just looking forward to a bit of half term warmth..!

I love Turkey. People are absolutely still going there. Fantastic place.

InfinitySeven · 26/09/2014 21:44

Turkey is on the Times list of places not to travel, in today's edition. It might be worth checking the foreign office advice. Although it's in a year, so nothing to worry about now!

CoteDAzur · 26/09/2014 22:29

What Sootica said.

We just spent the whole summer in Turkey. It's a big country and the beaches & tourist resorts are very far away from the Syrian border.

Does The Times think ISIS militants might attack Turkey and take on the second largest army in NATO after the US? Hmm

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 26/09/2014 23:00

Foreign office advice is not to travel within 10km of the border to Syria. As I said above that is nearly 1,000 miles away from the resorts.

Bowlersarm · 26/09/2014 23:04

I wouldn't.

There are a lot more other countries in the world to go to.

InfinitySeven · 26/09/2014 23:04

Apologies Sootica. I didn't spot that before I posted!

Ignore me, OP.

dreamingofsun · 27/09/2014 09:52

we've just booked. my husband is nervous about this sort of thing, but he assessed any potential risks as OK. my view was that its a long way away from trouble, and that if you are reliant on tourism you aren't going to be in favour of housing any extremits who bomb tourists

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 27/09/2014 11:47

Put it this way, if there was trouble in Aberdeen, would it put off holiday in Cornwall? I doubt it, Syria is twice as far as that from the Turkish resorts.

BucketsnSpades · 27/09/2014 11:54

Well although I am sure the risk is minimal now we were faced with this decision and chose a different Mediterranean resort. Who knows what will happen in the seven or eight months between now and next summer. To put this into context I am a real chicken about anything foreign and would never even go to Prague for fear of the pick pockets.
