Wobbly about a forthcoming trip as travelling with young DC and concerned about Syria/Iraq situation. There is no FCO advisory against travel to areas we are going to, but concerned about terrorism risk.

I'm pretty sure Jordan is fine. I went to Amman a few years ago. Its a fascinating place.

I'd have no problem with going to Jordan.

We went on holiday there in 2003 (our DD was 3) just after UK/US invasion of Iraq and it felt completely safe. There were lots of military personnel flying through the airport though.

We just about had Petra to ourself too Smile

Dd travelled there at Easter to visit a friend studying in Amman. Year abroad Arabic language students for the last academic year were sent to Jordan instead of Lebanon or the previous year Egypt. Flying in and out the airline seemed to avoid areas and for a portion of the flight they were required to stay in their seats for safety reasons.

Once there they had no problems and were, in general, overwhelmed by the friendliness of the local people. There were very few tourists travelling independently so they were something of a novelty. There were though a number of people on organised tours, particularly at Petra.

This was at Easter however, before the most recent escalation.
They had the most amazing time and met incredibly interesting people!

I have just moved back from a year living in Jordan. Advice is stay away from the borders and Maan but apart from that all fine. I love Jordan, there is so much to see and do. Jerash and all the other Roman ruins, Petra and Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and so much more. I highly recommend the Kempinski Ashtar Dead Sea, the Holiday Inn is the cheapest at the Dead Sea and is really lovely but the Kempinski is luxurious, all the standard rooms have sea views (amazing sunset), and the service is lovely. If you need any tips feel free to ask me.
