I will be flying to Oz (Singapore Airlines)and putting ds in his own car seat on the flight.
Does anyone have expereince of their car seat fitting or not? We have a Maxi Cosi Priori XP which Singapore say is one of their approved makes to take on board...........but it is still dependent on whether it will actually fit in the seat. Anyone had any experience of this or know of a narrow car seat I could use?

There was a thread about a similar issue recently but I can't find it, sorry

If it is on the airline's list then I would expect it to fit

We took a big Britax on a Virgin flight and it was fine

Sorry if this sounds a little dumb - but if you put your baby into a car seat, does that mean you have to buy a full (i.e. adult) ticket rather than the infant (0-2 years old) ticket were you don't actually get a seat for baby, just use of a carrycot attached to a bulk head seat. My husband is really keen to take our 1 month old baby on a 12 hour journey to Kathmandu and I'm trying to decide whether it's giong to be feasable and whether we should buy a full ticket so get an extra seat to make baby comfortable in.

Padme - yes you have to buy a seat for your baby if you want them in a car seat. They are not usually full price but not as cheap as taking an infant

For a little baby I'd go for the carrycot option and save the cash although you have to check what baggage allowance you get

teabags we go to oz in nov, but fwiw i have just flown to cyrpus on a standard boeing 737 (thomson airlines)the seat restrition measured 16 inch width for a car seat base, (only the plastic bit not the actual seat) we paid for a seat for DD (21 mo) and she sat in her cat seat the whole way! However it turned out that the width wasnt the problem it was actually the depth as DD is very tall, in her car seat her feet were uncomfortably squished on the seat in front, we were lucky and got an exit seat position last minute b4 take off. Its was a practice run as we have to go to australia in nov and have bought DD a seat on the plane with the view to taking her car seat on it. I fly with BA and they have said that the max base width is 17.5 inches on there long haul flights, so i would cetainly think that yours will be fine if the base is 17.5 or less. If in doubt ring them and ask for plane seating dimensions. hth

when do you fly?

btw dd car seat is the maxi cosi priori, not the xp..not sure if there are different dimensions?

mamamaaargh · 13/10/2006 02:49

I only just came accross this post so may be a bit late but, if anyone needs to travel with a car seat, you can find the widths of the seat on all aircraft & airlines on seatguru.com

we flew with singapore and be careful as the check in desk were fine with us using the car seat - some of the cabin crew were very flustered about it - hopefully that is not the case 2 years later.

We had a Britax Eclipse - has a pretty chunky base and it fitted fine. However you do know that it is illegal to use UK car seats in Aussie cars. Our seats have to be bolted to the car.

How old is your ds??

We are okay now as dd1 is over 14kgs and so technically we can say it is a booster seat with a 5 point harness.

Just thought I would let you know.

eidsvold · 18/10/2006 12:38

when dd1 was 8 months old - we went with the sky cot option and organised our hire car to have an aussie car seat. It was fitted etc ready to put dd1 in and go when we arrived.

eidsvold · 18/10/2006 12:45

I think our bolts are similar to the isofix system - I suspect. See if I can find info for you.

info for qld if another state - just google dept of transport for that state.

Thanks everyone for all your messages.
We fly in 3 weeks. Have checked out car seat measurements on seatguru, with the airline and with Maxi Cosi. Praying it will fit and feeling pretty hopeful now after your comments greydriver.

We have reserved bulk head seats so hopefully depth will be ok as there wil be a bit of extra room in front.

I found out a while ago that our car seat isn't compatible in Oz which is a pain as we need it here and to get to the airport and need it on the plane etc! (DS is under 14kg)

Greyriver - I've heard BA provide car seats on board that are made especially to fit their flight seats.

Also, Singapore Airlines told me I have to bring the car seat instructions on board with me and hand it to the crew (to prevent them getting flustered I presume?!)

I just put the seat on myself and showed them when I had finished - but it was jun 04 when this happened to perhaps with the increase of people taking carseats on board they have come up with this policy. I know the cabin crew were trying to strap seat in - easier if I just did it.
