Want to stay in this area next Summer. It's near to the train station and central, and it means we won't have to hire a car if we stay here. Flights booked already. Looking for an apartment now with pool in a smallish complex,- low key rather than full on iyswim. Dont want anything super fancy, but clean spacious, with a balcony and a pool is a must even if it's a shared one.
Want to use trains and ferries to get around, and plan on taking day trips to Verona and Venice, and maybe doing Gardaland.
Can anyone recommend anything please? Anyone found any gems in this area?
We are thinking of £1000 for 10 nights. Is that about right, or are we under budgeting?
Thanks

Getting around by ferry is the best way to see the lake. Sirmione is very near and is stunning. Gardone, Lazise, Bardolino and Garda are also great to visit.Malcesine is brlliant but takes ages on the ferry so you would be better off getting the bus.

We have no interest in theme parks so can't comment on Gardaland.

Thanks Bunbaker The whole area looks stunning. I'm looking at Owners Direct and the like for an apartment. Found some good ones but surprised that there are quite a few with no pools, or those that have are mega expensive.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place though..
We will be out and about most if the time exploring and sightseeing, and of course we can swim in the lake, but would like a pool even if it's a small one to have a dip during the day and cool off.

Any recommendations from anyone out there?
Have sent an enquiry email off for one that's ideal but it says that the changeover day must be Saturday. We're arriving on Monday, but thought it was worth an ask anyway.

I loved Peschiera! Free buses run to the parks, you can get timetables everywhere. The train to Verona was so easy too.

I've got this small hotel bookmarked for the future as it does adjoining rooms here

Behoove · 22/09/2014 11:16

P.s.
this is where we stayed. We had a one bedroom apartment. It's quite far out, not walkable, but there was a free shuttle several times a day into the evening.

Celticlass2 · 22/09/2014 12:16

Thanks muchly Behoove I'm going to have a look nowSmile Not bothered being a bit out as long as we can use some kind of public transport to get us around.

Residence Eden looks very promising. Thanks. Have looked it up on Trip advisor and the reviews are very good. It's in our price range as well. Will discuss with DH and DD.
The other hotel that you linked to is booked up already for our dates next August!
Got a reply from Owners Direct today. Disappointed. They are strictly Saturday to Saturday so no good for our odd number of days..
We rarely book flights at the weekend as they are always more expensive. Flights were just over £600 departing Monday, and £750 if we travelled on Saturday. No contest really..

Would you consider a caravan? We had a week at camping butterfly we went with canvas holidays and it was excellent. The caravan was clean, modern and spacious. There were two bedrooms and bathrooms. The site has a great pool, restaurant and bar. Playground, b castle and children's activities in the peak weeks. It is walking distance into town and about 5 minutes to the lakeside lido/ beach and a great restaurant. Despite all the facilities the site is quite small which we liked but canvas also do Bella italia which has more on site. Excellent value.

shabbadab · 22/09/2014 19:22

Ps. They do any day arrival and departure so would fit your flights. : )

wormshuffled · 22/09/2014 19:39

Another vote for Bella Italia, we enjoyed it here, and its a very pleasant walk along the promenade to the town.

Celticlass2 · 22/09/2014 20:46

I'm not sure Resident Eden would be for us having looked at it a bit more closely. Lots of hidden extras as well which bumps up the price quite a bit. Thanks anyway Behoove. All suggestions welcome.
Shabb we have looked at Canvas and Eurocamp but tbh, there is no way that I'm paying circa £1600 to stay in a caravan, even in the peak summer months!
We've stayed with and both before and had some great deals in the May half term, but summer prices are shocking!!
I am going to keep looking.

Wow. That's not so good value then for peak weeks! If you're ok with the idea you could always try one of the European equivalents that have caravans on the same sites. If the countries school holidays are different the prices may vary and may work out a good deal.

Behoove · 23/09/2014 08:29

That's a shame about Eden. I do remember the cleaning being extra but maybe they've added other things since. I think italian self catering is quite basic compared to eg Portugal. We will definitely be back soon but not SC as I can't get my head round paying so much money, then being charged extra for cleaning, bedding and towels.

Celticlass2 · 23/09/2014 09:26

Yes Behoove it was things like having to pay for tea towels as extras as well as linen and towels which I know are fairly standard, but I just thought this was a bit OTT. When you're paying almost £1400 I really don't expect to have to shell out any extra for things like tea towels. Perhaps it's just Italy though, as we have never had this in Spain and
Portugal!

A few reviews mentioned that the management were very officious as well, and fairly inflexible with check in times.

I agree with you about SC in Italy though, as opposed to Spain and Portugal which we have found to be really good value with a huge variety to choose from.
Hadn't really considered hotels, but going to look at that as well to give us more options.

Shabb I think we want something a bit more low key than a caravan type arrangement, although some of the sites like Butterfly and .Bella Italia look fab, but I think Peak season hols would be far too full on for us. Wouldn't mind doing Easter or May half term sometime though.

Yes. Totally understand. We are just at last year of non school holidays and we are dreading the crowds. They can really transform a place! Good luck!

lovingmatleave · 01/10/2014 21:29

another thumbs up here for the Bellia Italia campsite. We stayed early june and it was reasonably quiet, although the surrounding area and roads were very busy at that time with lots of tourist coaches. WE had a mobile home right at the edge of the site so it was quiet for us, but accommodation not particularly great. I loved swimming in the morning in Lake Garda and it had a nice restaurant and pizza take away on site and fab pools. They do have bungalows on site but they were right by the pool complexes so think it would be too busy. I think you are underbudgeting tbh. I looked a few years ago as I loved it there so much but prices seemed really high in school holiday summer time, so didn't go back.

Sorry not much help! just wanted to say really how much I liked the area.

Celticlass2 · 02/10/2014 15:17

Thanks loving have found a fantastic apartment for just over £800 for 10 days. Smile just got our two nights to book in Verona now. we have twelve days in total.
We'll probably book our Verona hotel in January.
Got a great deal on hotels last January in the Travel republic sale.

Would you link to your apartment please?

roughtyping · 05/10/2014 20:50

Celticlass, just wanted to say it is a stunning place to visit. Have been to Lake Garda 3 times now and would go back in a second. Verona is my favourite city in the world. And another happy customer of Bella Italia too :)
