travelling with 18 month old to Sri Lanka

I have booked and paid for a 4 week break in Sri Lanka but my 18 month old had a reaction to the first of 3 hep a&b combined jab so doctor won't give anymore!

We are staying on in a beach bungalow the whole time but feel that awful taking my baby without it when it seems to be recommended!

Anyone have any advice in regards to holiday in Sri Lanka or vaccination's?

the NHS page is here:

has your child had all the other recommend vaccinations?

remember 24/7 DEET due to dengue risk.

I am almost sure I had hep A and B separately. Can you go to a private travel clinic and ask? I would not go without the vaccines

AggressiveBunting · 23/09/2014 03:57

When are you going? My understanding of the combined vacc was that you're protected by the first dose for a certain amount of time but the second and third give you longer immunity.

When you say beach bungalow, is it air-conditoned? Not trying to be flippant, but I think Mosquitoes are more of a problem as is the heat.

(I have been to sri-lanka many times and took my DS at 14 months; he had all of his jabs. He had and extra TB one as well so you may want to check this.)

She has had all of her vaccines its only the hep a&b which they wont give her anymore and we are enquiring re typhoid and maybe rabies at a private clinic as NHS wont give.

SoldeInvierno - I done the combined due to her only needing 3 rather than 6 injection but sure I made the right choice now. I have booked an app at a private clinic. Thanks. X

AggressiveBunting - We are going at the end of Nov but I will check at my appointment with the private clinic how long that will cover her for. Thanks. X

SquidgyMummy - Its not air conditioned just fans but we have mosquito nets over the beds and I am buying for the pram we are buying too and will stock up on deet and bringing leggings etc for the evening. I will check about the TB. Any other tips? X

I have been to Sri Lanka and didn't have a rabies jab. It is a course of 3 jabs so you may need to enquire now how long it will take to have all three. Would recommend you get typhoid jab.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I spoke to a very helpful private travel clinic and they advised me to get my doctor to refer me to a paediatrician so we can find out if it was the vaccination that caused the reaction as it was queried as a viral infection as well. They then will risk assess and possibly give under controlled conditions.

I will also get typhoid closer to our travelling date as it takes better the older the child.

We are still considering a rabies jab due to my other half getting bitten randomly by a dog when he was running on the beach which has made us a bit wary of stray dogs.

If you get bitten by a dog, you have 24 (or maybe it is 48, cant remember) hours to get the jab. So unless you are somewhere extremely remote and without hospitals, I would not worry so much about that one
