where to take my mum for a fun few days

I don't see my mum very often as we live so far apart (two countries apart!!). She is on her own and never takes a holiday - she just visits my sisters. I would love to take her away for a few days break. It has to be in the UK as she doesnt like flying/boats (hence why I don't see her too often!!). She lives in Altrincham, Manchester, so i was thinking somewhere a couple of hours from there.
Any nice hotels (that arent too costly) that would suit a lively lady who enjoys quite nice surroundings and a glass or two of wine? We won't have transport so we need to be able to access a town easily.

She loves history and nature and good musicals or plays!! and I'd love to make a bit of a fuss of her!!

Liverpool/Chester? Loads to do - art galleries, museums, theatres in Liverpool, posh hotels in chester, lots of nice places to eat.

York, Chester or the Lake District (nice hotel with a spa).....I'll keep thinking...

Just seen this reviewed in The Guardian www.chestergreenbough.com

What about the train up to Glasgow or Edinburgh?

thanks for tips; just looked at the chesterbough hotel - it does look lovely!! I know I wont be able to afford anything quite like that - i don't mean to sound mean but with 5 teenage children, i can't justify too much money spent on myself...!

mum loves 'olde England' type stuff - it doesnt have to be grand or luxurious, but quaint or charming with good manners will do her!! (and someone else to cook breakfast will do me!!) Lake district is lovely - I don't think she's ever been there. I tooke her to scotland a few years ago (her last holiday) on a coach trip - it was pretty awful but we laughed the whole trip through!!! but NEVER again - I was the youngest there and my mum was the next youngest!!

London? Plenty to do here!

Or how about Brighton, Bath etc?

just rereading my previous message and it looks like I am saying scotland was awful - I meant the coach trip as a holiday. Scotland though is beautiful and I would LOVE to go again. So thats an idea.... and still open to suggestions..
