Would like to be near Notre Dame or surrounding area. The following have come up on Last Minute.com. Would be grateful for any thoughts or direction to other hotels:

Novotel Paris Les Halles
Hotel Brighton
Holiday inn Paris Notre Dame
Radisson Blu Le Dokhan
Best Western opera Diamond

Thanks for any tips.

We stayed at the Novotel in Les Halles in May.

Very clean and good hotel, breakfast was a bit of a queue when you left it late but they re-stock the food, it was just waiting to get a table.

There is a huge building site outside the hotel but we had no problem with it. OK, our window was not to the front but the work didn't start in the early hours and by the time we returned around 5pm the workers were gone.

The hotel does not have parking space but we came with the Eurostar.

The area is ok, enough brasseries and cafes to go to dinner but not cheap, we paid around €80 for the 3 of us. You could walk to the Notre Dame area within 15 minutes.

Have you looked at the traveller ratings on Trip Advisor or hotel booking sites, eg Hotels.com or Bookings.com? If you get more than one site giving a high rating, go with that hotel. I usually discount comments such as 'X was the best bar tender ever' and look for comments which interest me. Usually size and quality of room, has it been refurbished or is it a dingy hole, how close is it to where I want to be, are there issues with party goers, traffic and building sites? Is it clean, well kept and efficient with generally helpful staff? If it gets at least 8/10 or then I will consider it.

Sorry - Booking.com

Thanks everyone. It's so expensive, about £300 PN for an unimpressive chain hotel. Might go someone else...

We stayed at Le Dokhan for our minimoon and had a lovely time!

I think we were upgraded to a deluxe room (it wasn't tiny in the way some TA reviews set out) which was attractively furnished and lovely and quiet.

The lounge / champagne bar / lobby area were very relaxing and smelt deliciously of sandalwood. We didn't eat there but had a couple of expensive drinks.

Really easy access to the metro, lovely restaurant directly across the road - would recommend.

One thing, le Dokhan isn't that near notre dame, it's Le tour Eiffel/trocadéro/champs élysées area.

Thanks, yes I had to expand my search area a bit as there was very little in Notre Dame (and what was there too expensive for what it was). I'll look again at Le Dokhan- thanks!

We stayed at the Balmoral round the corner from L'Arc de Triomphe with the Eiffel Tower within walking distance. Metro is very quick and easy to navigate if you want to get around.

We stayed in the Novotel Eiffel Tower - which is quite a few minutes walk along the river from the tower, but near a couple of metro stations. We booked room only, there were plenty of places to either buy stuff for brekkie the night before or cafes. Worked well for us.

noramum · 12/09/2014 07:14

Code- when do you want to go? We booked in January for May and paid £600 for 4 nights at the Novotel, incl. breakfast. We booked directly at their websites.

One thing about Trip advisor or similar sites, you need to check where the reviewer is living. I found that US-tourists come with quite different views about hotels than Europeans. I work often in Germany and more than one guest in the hotel I normally stay complained about the room size, they expect always two Kingsize beds like in a lot of US hotels. Just read careful.

Have you thought about an apartment? We always find one through Homeaway.com. For £300 a night you could get something amazing - not just a tiny hotel room and you can nip to the boulangerie to make your own breakfast.

LillianGish · 12/09/2014 07:33

Check out rental number 267446 for instance if you fancy Notre Dame.

LillianGish · 12/09/2014 07:38

Or 161528 on the Ile St Louis - SO much nicer than a hotel.

LillianGish · 12/09/2014 07:42

Neither of those costs anywhere near £300 a night.
