Thinking of spending a few days in Edinburgh towards the end of October. I will be almost 7 months pregnant so although I am very happy to do a fair bit of walking and plenty of mooching about, I don't think I can handle any huge hikes!

So based on the time of month I am going where is best to stay for some lovely views and walks, and some cute shops? I was thinking near Old Town as I've heard that's lovely and I believe it's not too far from Edinburgh Castle? Anything else in that area that you guys would recommend? I literally have no clue but have always wanted to go, as well as my partner.

Also, how cold is it in October?! And any recommendations on where to stay in this area? I was thinking of using Air BnB rather than a hotel.

Thanks muchly! Smile

Weather - it could be anything from dry and sunny to snowing. Just keep an eye on things but it can always be breezy and rainy even if the say starts off sunny.

You could do the open top bus tour. Shows you everything plus you can hop on and off all day so saves your feet with too much walking if you get tired. Walking down the Royal Mile is easier than walking up, ditto The Mound!

Old Town accommodation - I don't know many B&Bs but good hotels to try would be the Apex at the Grassmarket or Waterloo Place (OK, WP not exactly old town but right at the end of Princes Street), or the Holiday Inn Express on the Royal Mile.

Shopping wise, loads on the Royal Mile but quite a lot of over priced tatty touristy shops. Grassmarket and Cockburn Street are ok. George and Prices Street better.

Would second any of the Apex hotels, and the Grassmarket one is really convenient for the old town - lots of lovely shops in the streets off the royal mile - and many good restaurants around there too.

We've been to Edinburgh a couple of times - just back from a weekend and we rented an apartment in Stockbridge which is a walk from old town or short taxi ride but the upside is that it's not as busy/touristy. Loads of lovely delis and near the modern art gallery if that appeals

wonderful - thanks for all your suggestions. I shall take note!

Although it does involve some stairs, the Camera Obscura is a fascinating place to visit - it is just outside the Castle. Right at the other end of the Royal Mile, I'd recommend the Palace of Holyrood.

I would definitely second the idea of the tourist bus - the ability to hop on and off at the different tourist attractions is very useful.

I lived in the old town for years and tbh I'd stay in the new town if I were you. Very easy to get to everything (although at 7 months, I'd budget for taxis as Edinburgh is quite hilly), and it's a bit more naice than the old town.

Ps look at 20 Albany street for an amazing b&b

I was going to suggest staying in Stockbridge. Lots of lovely shops.

I agree with Stockbridge - I live there and can confirm that it's lovely Smile there are lots of nice places to eat, the botanic gardens are here, a famtastic sunday market, and the open top bus takes you down this way too. It's quite a steep walk up to Princes St but the 24, 42 or 29 buses will get you there within 10 mins.

There are lots of Air NnB apartments in the vicinity, I've been checking them out for my parents recently.

Hope you enjoy edinburgh Smile
