Hi. We are starting to plan a trip to Italy in October - flying into Rome for a couple of days and then heading south to one or more places via train preferrably (or bus). Have one ds (4) and I'm pg so I don't want too much action.... Any ideas for great to stay towns or accommodation. Thanks - hope to show to dp just how useful MN really is by this exercise

Amalfi... Sorrento. lovely!

anywhere? Rome is lovely but i've not been further south, only north. Have fun.

Very jealous - Rome is amazing - so much to see there. If you're into sites there is Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli which is great. Positano is beautiful on the Amalfi coast but beware as very steep, esp if pg. There's also Pompeii, which is great, or Herculaneum which is even better! I've been to Rome in late October/November and the weather is lovely. Have a great time!

We flew to Rome last year, and hired car down to Sorrento (stayed at Hilton - up hill but v nice and with indoor pool out of season). There are some lovely little villages and coves, and great places to eat. We did Vesuvius and Pompeii, then spent a couple of days in Rome. We all had a great time - have 4 kids who were then 11, 9, 8 and 1.

We went to Rome 10 years ago and got the train from Rome-Naples, and spent a week there. We went to Pompeii, which I would highly recommend, and Vesuvius, not a goos idea if u r pg as quite a stiff climb.
A good place we went was Pozzuoli - fab amphitheatre (better then the Coliseum, we thought) and there is also the Solfratara Crater, where you can see bubbling mud pools and fumaroles - all a very flat walk! We also took a boat out to the Island odo Ischia, whih was so gorgeous - less touristy than Capri and very slow paced, nice beaches etc ......
IN Rome, the Pantheon is amazing as is the Forum and the Vatican.
Not sure how much a 4yo would like it though (we were pre-kids when we went). Maybe introduce lots of stories about the Romans before you go, then he will be interested?

Oh - and in Rome go to the Capitoline Museum - the excavations in the basement are amazing and you can stand in the Tabularium and look out over the Forum - amazing at dusk.
