Try Il Nido hotel in Sorrento if you're looking for a quiet place. It's up on the hill but the view is amazing, the hotel is really nice and cozy and their breakfast is delicious! Grin
I've been there in March 4 years ago for 4-5 days and I was able to visit around. You can take a bus along Capri coast or go by train to visit the ruins.

We stayed in the Rota Suites last summer - very nice self-catered apartment. The ones at the front overlook a lemon grove and have sea views. There is a road outside, but there are double-glazed french windows in the living room and bedroom and shutters which significantly reduce the noise. It is about 5 mins walk from the main shopping area, but feels quieter. The apartments have the use of the pool and bathing platform (accessed by a lift) of the sister hotel around the corner (name forgotten). We didn't eat in much, but it was worth having a kitchen as the restaurants in Sorrento were shockingly expensive. These apartments are also air-conditioned, which is good when the weather is hot (stifling when we visited in July).

By the way, if you want a good guide for Pompeii or Herculaneum, I can recommend a Sorrento-based licensed guide called Lucia (www.luciapompeiiguide.com/). She wasn't cheap, but the two hours we spent with her at Pompeii was well worth it - she was able to bring it to life and she was very good with our boys (5 and 8 at the time), finding ways to keep them engaged.
