Have you been to Vietnam?

I love Thailand (especially the people & the food), quite enjoyed Malaysia & wonder about Vietnam.
A few temples, a boat on the Mekong delta & a week on the beach.
Any opinions?

Not been to the beach there.
Hanoi - great food, water puppet theatre, interesting museums, and just great to walk around and explore back streets. I also went to an area near there which is similar to halong bay ( with limestone karsts) but inland.
Ho Chi Minh - much busier with heavy traffic. The tunnels are worth a visit and there are some good museums
Sapa - to visit hilltop tribes, take the overnight train from Hanoi. I am doing this in October.
You do need a visa - invitation letter and then form to fill out and obtain the visa at the airport.

When are you going and what sort of budget?

ruralmyth · 24/08/2014 04:37

thanks. We'd like a bit of history, not too much driving (I'm horribly car sick) & a bit of luxury at the end.
Cold, June/July, reasonably healthy budget.

If you want luxury in the city I would recommend the Metropole in Hanoi.

deXavia · 24/08/2014 05:09

I second the metropole in Hanoi - utterly fabulous hotel. We loved Hanoi but it's probably a few days stay then you need to head elsewhere which may be difficult with car sickness but Vietnam is definitely worth a visit

ColdCottage · 24/08/2014 20:29

Ho chi min in the south is great for history, you can visit the killing fields, go down the tunnels and the prison in the city. This can be reached by train or in sure a short internal flight. There are also the tribes to visit in the north near the Chinese boarder.

It is also worth getting clothes made. A Dong Silk is one of the best. Not the cheapest but great. I had 3 fittings to get 50's style silk dress made for my wedding - to dance in for the evening. DH has his wedding suit made as well as 2 others and he is super fussy designer buyer normally and worked in the City.

Hoi An has a nice beach and you can swim in the sea too so a nice place to wait while you have your clothes made.

I also had 3 silk tops made, a 3/4 length English wool coat (should have asked for an extra lining in this to add warmth) plus a cotton maxi dress and 3 skirts, all for less that 1000 USA dollars.

We had a few nights in Hanoi, a two night cruise in Halong Bay, a few nights in Saigon and then 5 nights or so in Hoi An.

Loved Hanoi. If I ever find myself anywhere in Asia agian I'll be looking for an excuse for a stopover in Hanoi. It's my favourite place I've ever been. Do the street food tour with the Hanoi Cooking Centre.

Halong Bay was amazing, but be careful what company you use. I'd recommend Indochina Junk, they are the only company allowed to cruise in that part of the bay so it's very tranquil.

Saigon very interesting, and gives you the opportunity to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels.

Hoi An very nice, but we would have preferred another night in each of Hanoi and Saigon, 5 nights was too much. If you go there, make sure you are there for the full moon festival.

ColdCottage · 24/08/2014 20:42

Make sure you bargain for everything, these will try and charge you 3 or 4 x the real price for drinks etc on the streets. Lovely people.

If you want a bit more or a party scene for a couple or days Nha Trang, and the Louisiana Beach club is the place to be. Watch out for your wallet, this is the only place my DH has been mugged and we travel a lot. Not violent, just prostitutes feeling him up after he come out of a club in the early hours of the morning. Good job he just took cash out with him and not his wallet so only lost about 2 pounds.

ColdCottage · 24/08/2014 20:46

As I said Ho Chi min or Saigon is great for accessing the Cu Chi tunnels. It also has some wonderful shopping, bars and restaurants.

Sweet meats are a national dish in soups!

Great advice, thanks.

Only been to Hanoi and loved it. Have heard good things about Hoi An and want to go one day.

SoldeInvierno · 31/08/2014 06:57

Sorry to hijack. I am going by myself in 2 weeks time to Hanoi. Is it relatively safe for women travelling alone? I much prefer to wander the streets than doing a tour. I am already booked into a Halong bay tour. Thanks for the advice

Stokes · 31/08/2014 09:32

I was with DH Solde, but I can't remember feeling the slightest bit uncomfortable. Certainly we saw groups of women together. I think you'd be fine.

Bambambini · 31/08/2014 12:12

Went to Hanoi with two girlfriends and felt fine though wasn't alone. It didn't feel threatening and I've been to other places where I did. I did go off on my own and it felt fine. Check out the Hanoi forum on tripadvisor.

SoldeInvierno · 01/09/2014 07:54

Thanks Bamba and Stokes. Very excited about this trip!!

I spent months working in Vietnam working out of Hanoi and working in Highlands. (no experiences of the south as such) Try some local beer hoi, and a Cafe-no-da. Some of the street restaurants can be fine, try at least one bowl of Pho - noodle soup when you are there Bo=beef Ga=chicken I think i remember.

Lots of markets in Hanoi, went to opera house and saw cheap recital. Felt safe walking around at night. I read somewhere that police etc have been specifically told not to harrass tourists at the threat of losing pensions. Found people generally friendly.

Language isn't too bad either compared to say thai as its a romanised script and you can quickly pick up things, some french throwbacks too, cafe - omelette coffee.

If you can try going to the silk / pottery villages. Saw some amazing hand painted pottery / tea sets.

Highlands was quite interesting, went to Hue and was lovely temple complex but if anything you were allowed to walk all over it which isn't good for its preservation. Sea was weird in how warm it was, strong onshore currents to pushing you back onto the beach!

Taxis -i think they all have meters now?!- i used the green and white little daewoos a lot. other wise make sure agree price up front (I was done once)

Look for advice on boat trips, I think people should be vigilant about night boat trips, look for reviews of safety before you go.

Loved Vietnam. We started in Ho Chi Minh City (bustling and busy but very very interesting), went over to Dalat, a lovely little mountain town with cable car, nice walks, a couple of bizarre attractions like the Crazy House (Google it!), and motorbike tours. Then flew with Vietnam Airlines to Hanoi (lovely, lots to see imo). Then got an overnight sleeper and bus to BacHa (like SaPa but much less touristy. Mountain tribes, walking, hardly any western tourists and the only place in Vietnam we didn't get hassled to buy stuff). Then went to HaLong Bay. Well worth going spectacular, though echo what someone else said, do your research and pay more for a lovely luxury boat. Then bus tour from Hanoi to a place like HaLong Bay but inland, honestly can't remember the name but some gorgeous scenery. Really loved Vietnam, though we did get hassled a lot. Worth considering internal flights or trains if you don't like car journeys. Oh we also went to Phu Quoc which was nice enough but very very busy and developed.

BB01 · 26/10/2014 10:12

Completely forgot we did a Mekong tour too. Was atrocious, terrible accommodation and no organisation from start to finish. Highly recommend you do research and go with a well reviewed operator

Eastwickwitch · 25/01/2015 14:38

How does
Hanoi 2 days
Overnight junk cruise 2 night
Hoi Chi Min (including tunnels) 3 days
Cai Be overnight on Bassac boat
Phu Quoc for 6 nights sound?
