Which Resort to go to in Lake Garda?

I was wondering if you could help me. We are hoping to go to Lake Garda in September and I would like to know what would be the best resort for a couple in their mid 30s? We are not particularly into water sports or anything like that but would like a resort where is there is plenty to see and do, so not too quiet. Any advice would be gratefully received! Thank you.

We stayed in Sirmione last year and Garda two years ago and loved them both.

Hi Bunbaker, thank you for your reply. Was there more to do in Garda than Sirmione? I have heard many people say Riva is good but as we are going in September some people say that the weather might be much cooler there than in the likes of Garda or other towns south. Where did you stay?

We stayed here in Garda. The location was pretty good. Not next to the lake, but only five minutes from it. It had an excellent pool area, table tennis and table football. It is a family run place and the staff were delightful. The owner is very much involved in the hotel and does all the entertainment. He is a real character, pretty talented and very personable. The food was mostly nice. One or two of the meals could have been nicer, but we felt so well looked after that I would go back.

Garda is about a third of the way up the lake so it means that you can visit just about any town by ferry from there. There are quite a few shops and lots of cafes right next to the lake. There is also a flat paved pathway that runs along the lake as far as Bardolino that you can either walk or cycle along.

Sirmione is right at the southern end and on a long peninsula. It has a very photogenic castle at the entrance to the town worth seeing - you must climb the tower to get the most amazing views. At the end of the peninsula there is the Grotte di Catullo which is a huge site with Roman remains. It is really worth seeing.

Again there are lots of shops to look around. We stayed here. Our room was in the same building as the reception and was lovely and spacious. The food was excellent and the bar and outdoor dining area look out over the lake so you can watch the sun go down in the evening. The staff weren't very friendly though and the pool area wasn't as nice. That said I would go back there as well.

If you are going in September I would seriously consider Sirmione as there is a thermal spring in the lake and some of the hotel pools are fed with this water, as was the hotel pool where we stayed.

Both towns are different, but I liked both equally.

Bunbaker - thank you so much for your reply and for all the helpful advice and recommendations. As we have never been to Italy before I like to find out as much as I can beforehand to make sure we know what to expect and where to stay etc. You have been so helpful. I will look at these hotels and do some reading on these resorts. Thank you.

That's OK. Lake Garda is one of my favourite places. It is breathtakingly beautiful. I could happily go there every year and stay in a different place each time.

I've stayed in Sirmione a couple of times but think that Malcesine is much nicer. It seems a bit less touristy (although obviously still populated by many tourists!) Beautiful location.

Bunbaker · 13/08/2014 19:54

I would love to go to Malcesine next time. We visited it when we were in Garda, but only had a few hours there.

SingSongSlummy · 13/08/2014 19:55

Ooh, do go. The castle is gorgeous and the cake car takes you up into the mountains for the most breathtaking views. We also found really good food pretty cheaply!

We went to sirmione on honeymoon and it was sensational

Totally agree, I love Lake Garda too, we've been to Garda, Bardolino and Peschiera. Have a look at Peschiera lovely town on the south of the lake ideal for a couple on holiday. There are riverside and city wall walks, loads of restaurants and nice shops. It's also good for the train to Verona and Milan if you want to explore further and all the ferries call here which is great for dotting round the other lake towns. I'm jealous Envy

SingSong We've just eaten our pasta from dishes bought in a little artisan pottery shop in Malcesine! Lovely place and the restaurant and views at the top of Monte Balde were so worth the wait in the queue for the cable car.

Lake Garda is one of my favourite places in the world - been a handful of times and hope to go again one day! I think the key is to decide whether you want to be at the north or the south end of the lake as whichever you choose it's easy to then visit other resorts at the same end.

Malcesine towards the north is lovely - as is Limone (although this is quite small).

On the south, Sirmione is fantastic (though expensive) but easy to get from here to Desenzano and Garda (both lovely resorts). There's also a lovely lakeside walk between Garda and a little place called Bardolino (which although probably too small to stay in, is worth a visit for lunch).

The south of the lake also makes day trips to Verona and Venice a bit quicker too if that is something you are considering.

Bunbaker · 13/08/2014 20:26

Cake car? I must travel in one of those Smile
We had a look round the castle and even witnessed a wedding while we were there.

I want to go now.

MillyMollyMama · 15/08/2014 20:27

Desanzano is a good location because, as well as the ferry service around the Lake, you can get the train to Verona and Venice. It is a lovely town and there are lots of places to stay and a good choice of restaurants.

Lovewhereilive · 15/08/2014 22:52

We stayed in Peschiera, loved it. We drove up the east side on the way back to Austria and although it was beautiful, we were glad we stayed at the southern end of the lake as easier to get to places, eg Verona.
