Miami - who´s been?

We´re thinking of going to Miami in July 2015. What is good to see and do there? We´re happy to travel around, say, within 100km. ish, but aren´t interested in going up to Orlando.

I´d be really interested to hear what it´s like and any recommendations you have. Thanks in advance!

Amazing city although it's a few years since I've been. We stayed 3 nights and just ate and drank, sat on the beach watching the beautiful people, then drove down to the keys. It was a fantastic holiday.

The Keys. Amazingly beautiful.

Happy36 · 06/08/2014 23:44

Thanks, both. Would we have to drive to visit the Keys? (We´d rather not drive).

The Keys are close to Miami, well Key Largo is, but you would have to drive or go on a boat trip.

I think it's about 150 miles down to Key West.

We did the drive last year with our children. I thought they would be blown away by the beautiful scenery, but they were not impressed after the first 30 10 minutes. Ingrates.

They loved it in Key West though.

Thanks! Probably we won´t bring the kids (for various reasons) but not definite yet.

A boat trip sounds amazing.

I think to get the most out of it it really would be best driving, it's actually not that bad driving in America! There's the Everglades to.

You can fly down to Key West from
Miami, I believe, but driving one way would be a great experience too.

I love driving in America. Massive cars, wide lanes and everyone just cruises along, none of the whizzing in and out and aggressive take overs of the UK.

It's an easy drive - a straight road and once you're out of Miami it's not too busy - iirc there's a highway and an 'old' road, which we took. If you drive you can stop off in the various keys/everglades etc. Although once we got to Key West the car did gather dust for the week!

Miami is a very interesting city to visit.

You do not have to drive to visit the Keys from Miami. There are some coach companies that do day trips out to Key West from the Miami downtown area; if you do not want to drive (and driving in Miami itself can be an interesting experience!) I would use one of these companies. It takes about 3 hours each way to get into Key West itself (as the bridge road is single lane). The Bayside centre in the centre of Miami (its a pretty spread out place) is a nice area with shops and restaurants. There is a metro train service in the city which is both cheap and reliable.

There is a daily train service from Miami that goes to other towns like Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton to name but two.

The worst part about Miami is its airport; its a right old dump of a place where you can walk miles to reach a long glacial moving line immigration.

Thanks, everyone. I think we will get this booked soon!

Hi we have booked for Feb 2015, Miami for 2 nights then a cruise to the Bahamas and Key West. We've got a day after the cruise when we want to go on one of the everglades boat trips.
