Driving to the South of France

DH would like to go to the South of France next year to a Eurocamp site or something similar.

We thought that we would get the Eurotunnel and break up the journey there and back with an overnight stay somewhere.

Has anybody done this trip and can they recommend any campsites within walking distance to the beach and places to stop and/stay en route.

Any other tips and advice are very much appreciated.

Forgot to say that in terms of overnight stay en route we would be looking for something that is clean, inexpensive and is suitable for toddlers.

We do this. Euro tunnel. Overnight in Novotel in Reims or Dijon. Very family friendly. Down the autoroute du Soleil to languedoc. Plenty of campsites on the beach. Serignan plage, club ferat, aloha. Look at the yelloh website and book through them as you tend to get better accommodation than euro camp or the like (IMO) but nothing wrong at all with those! Serignan plage have lovely Cabannes (pimped up mobile homes) that are a stones throw from the beach.

we do this - but drive from Germany - we don't camp though and look for an apartment / house to rent locally - we've just come back from 2 weeks in marseillan - not walking distance to beach - about a 10 min drive - but not full of campers/tourists...... (languedoc on the med)

we spent about 2000eur for 2 weeks of a 3 bed house with wifi/air con/ washing machine / parking / garden - we use this site to find a house www.homeaway.co.uk/

Thank Smokey, I will look into those.

Doradoo, I think we would prefer the amenities that come with a site as we have a very active toddler. Thanks for your suggestions though.

I was thinking that Brittany or the La Rochelle area might be easier for our first time. DH is concerned about the weather.

We would be looking at mid to end of June or late August early Sept.

I would go mid/late June as route will be clearer/services less busy.
Also tend to do overnight Reims in the novotel with a pool.
With toddlers you can plan a good period of journey for nap times hopefully and then plan stopoffs at services with play areas.
We also have previously set off very early (4.30am) on the second day and just put the kids in the car in their pjs, so they slept for a good while, whilst we clocked up the miles. In car dvd/ipad really essential though.

I agree concrete June would be better.

While I would definitely much prefer to go to the South of France, I am a little apprehensive of making such a long journey for our first car trip abroad.
