What has to go in the clear bag?

I'm going away for a few days and only taking hold luggage. The suitcase size is fine for my needs, however I'm struggling to get all my liquids into the 20cmx20cm clear bag. I need suncream, cream for eczema, and eyedrops for hayfever, as well as shampoo, conditioner, make-up and deodorant. I've read that mascara and spray deoderants have to go in the bag, but what about other make-upand roll-on deodorant? Do they have to go in the bag? There's not enough space!

any liquids need to go in the bag so that includes deodorant and suncream, make up, etc. The containers also need to be 100mls or less. Is there a Boots after security as you could buy toiletries in there and then they wouldnt need to be in the clear bag for the outbound journey.

dreamingbohemian · 30/07/2014 18:19

You do know each liquid can't be more than 100 ml right? if you get travel size for everything, it should all fit.

Any liquid makeup (foundation) has to go in as well as roll-on deodorant.

If it doesn't fit, check if your airport has a Boots on the other side of security -- the restrictions are only for going through security so you can buy shampoo and sun cream and such on the other side. Or at a pharmacy wherever you are travelling to.

Liquids, pastes and gels need to go in the sandwich bag - so mascara, liquid eyeliner, lip gloss go in the bag; eyeshadow, powder blush don't.

If you get the travel sizes (which you need to be under 100ml per item anyway) then it all fits in

MuttonCadet · 30/07/2014 18:28

Some airports count lipstick as well, safest to put that in as well.

WhereAreMyGlasses · 30/07/2014 18:30

Does anyone know if spray deodrant has to go in?

CMOTDibbler · 30/07/2014 18:30

Yes, spray deodorant goes in

Esmum07 · 30/07/2014 18:31

It is supposed to be stuff you need on the flight, which may include deodorant and make up but shampoo and conditioner? Is it long haul? If not you will need to put those in your check in luggage. And as someone said it has to be in 100ml or less bottles.

Esmum07 · 30/07/2014 18:32

Sorry, misread the bit about hold luggage. Just buy the small/100mls travel bottle or get a few sachets of shampoo and take those.

Springcleanish · 30/07/2014 18:33

If you only want hand luggage you'll need travel sizes or to buy them there or airside. Could you use a combined shampoo/conditioner or even shower gel/shampoo just for a few days?

Bumply · 30/07/2014 18:35

Putting luggage in the hold isn't an option if you've gone for a cheap flight with cabin luggage only, and you don't get the quick get away at the other end if you're having to wait for baggage to turn up.
although if you're having to buy make up and shampoo at your destination only to throw it away on the trip back you could end up spending what you saved...

If you have any prescription medicines I think it doesn't count as stuff that needs to go In the one clear bag but you still need to show these meds with the prescription as you go through security. That was the case when I travelled last year but do please double check!

ccatc · 30/07/2014 20:01

Thank you. I do have travel size bottles already (0nly 70 mls too) but I have several creams for my skin, and with everything else it's a really tight squeeze (even without deodorant). I will see if I can get shampoo and conditioner in a sachet though.

I thought you could have more than one clear bag, just that it all had to be bagged? Is that not the case?

LeapingOverTheWall · 30/07/2014 20:14

sorry, just went and checked - it is one bag per person Sad.

ChoudeBruxelles · 30/07/2014 20:17

Buy toiletries when you arrive. Just take stuff you can't get there, like your cream

stickoftruth · 30/07/2014 20:28

I struggle with this as well - can pack efficiently but I'm fussy about my serums, eye creams, cosmetics etc so I've struggled to fit it into one bag. If you're going to a reasonable quality hotel they should have shower gel/shampoo (check TripAdvisor because reviews often mention them), so you could ditch that unless your hair is fussy.
Lush do some solid toiletries which would not have to be bagged. Haven't tried any yet but planning to use them for my next trip. I use Pitrock solid deodorant so it also doesn't go in the bag.
You can decant creams etc into even smaller pots (70ml is big for just a few days) - I keep trial/sample pots for this. Probably not for prescription items though.
If you're travelling with a friend you could ask them to take some of your toiletries (I always ask DP as he hardly takes anything).

ilovepowerhoop · 30/07/2014 20:29

buy the toiletries at the airport or when you get there. Just take the essentials in the clear bag.

PeppermintInfusion · 31/07/2014 16:44

Just put the expensive/specialist stuff in your clear bag then the easy yo but cheap stuff like deodorant , toothpaste, shampoo etc either airside or at your destination. Is there anyone else going with you that could take some in their bag if they've room?

SorryForTheTypos · 01/08/2014 09:30

This is going to sound really stupid but bear with me as I'm an infrequent traveller...

The hold is the big luggagey bit yes? I thought you could put whatever toiletries you wanted in there and it was only the hand luggage that was restricted?

Am I wrong and will have to do a last minute dash for travel sized stuff?

dreamingbohemian · 01/08/2014 09:32

Yes, you can put whatever you want in checked luggage. Liquid restrictions are for cabin bags.

ilovepowerhoop · 01/08/2014 09:37

I think the OP worded it wrong as she put hold luggage in her first sentence but we knew she meant hand luggage. You are correct that you can put bigger sized liquid containers in the hold baggage but liquids taken on board cannot exceed 100mls each and need to be in a clear resealable bag no bigger than 20x20cm

SorryForTheTypos · 01/08/2014 09:41

Oh thank goodness! I was panicking then. I checked the Manchester airport website and it said

Liquids
Passengers will be allowed to take liquids, gels and pastes of 100mls or less in their hand baggage. These items must be contained within a small, transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which will have to be removed from their hand baggage and x-rayed separately.

but as this didn't mention liquids in the hold at all, I wondered if they were just not allowed at all.

Phew - thank you again.

specialsubject · 01/08/2014 17:11

if you aren't sorted, OP - the rules cover all liquids, gels and pastes for hand luggage. Anything that won't fit WILL be confiscated.

so take the essential medicals only. You can buy other stuff airside or at the resort.

this may mean going without makeup. Empires will not fall over that, but your holiday won't be fun if you are suffering with eczema and hayfever.

CuttedUpPear · 01/08/2014 17:21

Last time I flew they said that I had too many 100ml bottles in my clear bag Blush

I probably had about ten altogether.

Luckily DP only had 2 in his so I was able to bung my extras in there.
