Iceland in March

I've got a big birthday coming up in early March (gulp!), and I've always wanted to go to Iceland.

I've borrowed a guide book but to be honest it feels a bit like information overload! I'm thinking of about 5 nights, just me & DH, with 2/3 nights in Reykjavik and 2/3 nights somewhere else (hopefully to see the Northern Lights). Does that sound about right to 'see' everything?

Can anyone recommend:

  • Apartment/hotel in Reykjavik, or area of the city to look for?
  • Place to stay somewhere else, I'm visualising log cabin and outdoor hot tub type place! Town/area or even better hotel recommendations?
  • Tours to do, do I need to book before I leave? We are happy to drive but like the idea of a knowledgeable guide. We are desperate to see the NL if conditions are favourable).

Any other tips/advice very welcome, thank you in advance!

I went for a big bday a couple of years ago. Bday was Jan but went in May for long days (but obviously no northern lights), we took kids too. Went for a week, did 2-3 day Reykjavik and rest in self catering cabin on farm. Would have been happy with less time in city to be honest. Can't remember exact details of farm but there is an organisation that does farm stays in Reykjavik that seemed well set up. We did all the south east bit and drove ourselves, think you would need longer to travel further. I'd love to go back and tour the whole island.

I went on a work prize holiday thing to Iceland this March so I'll find out where we stayed Smile

We missed NL by a day Sad but early March is still prime time to see them. If they're your priority you might be better off staying in the hotel we stayed in for a couple of nights. It also jslas hot tubs but is quite a drive from capital. more info to follow Smile

I've got a big birthday coming up next spring and have just rather regretfully turned down idea of Iceland. More specifically, I've turned down a cruise to see the total solar eclipse that's due in the Icelandic Sea. I'm thinking the weather is likely to be shit, I suffer from seasickness and it's not a very big boat, and I can think of better ways to spend £1500. Also cruise company are being very cagey about the actual costs of the 'optional excursions' etc. Big shame, I was so desperate to see the '99 eclipse and missed it due to not-so-DP suddenly deciding he couldn't possibly look after the children or come with me to help care for them and all of us watch it. (Still rankling here)
