Hi all. Just thought you should all know how misleading the kids garnier ambre solaire kids sensitive advanced factor 50+ Is. It is not waterproof even though it has a picture of a child splashing in water on it. Brought from tesco a couple of weeks ago.
Today is our first day of holiday in Greece. Applied serious amounts of sunscreen as both my boys are very fair. Left it for 20 mins to soak in then they spent two hours in the poor. Within that time their faces, necks, backs and torso's were burned.
They now look like lobsters and have had to be kept out of the sun for the rest of the day. we have now brought a Nivea factor 50+ from the local shop costing us £25. Even though you can't put a price on the safety of the sun on their skin my husband and I will be making a formal complaint to tesco and garnier.
VERY misleading. Thought I should warn you all.

It's the 2 hours in the pool, look at the back of the bottle, what does it say about time spent in water?.

We're just back from a week away, used Boots 8 hour play & water resistant play, it was fantastic on our 3 but not for 2 hours in water in the sun, with no breaks & no reapplication.

HecatePropylaea · 14/07/2014 15:36

ouch. That looks very sore. Poor things.

Does the bottle itself say that it is waterproof? What instructions does it give?

Have you bought them some after sun stuff? Might that help them? Mine are heading to Kenya for the summer and I've gone overboard with the factor 50 and the soothing after sun gel and the constant nagging to stay out of the midday sun Grin because it's just miserable for them if they burn.

Poor middle lad. He's got a proper daily mail sad face on him, hasn't he? Grin Bless him. Hope he's feeling less sore soon and you guys can enjoy the rest of your holiday.

wigglesrock · 14/07/2014 15:38

Sorry just reread, you relied on a picture, you didn't even check that it said waterproof? and you want to complain to the product maker & supplier !

CawCanny · 14/07/2014 15:51

We've used that brand for years on our ds, never had any problems with it, we live in a hot climate and he's in and out the pool a lot.
BUT.. I do reapply it periodically and he wears a long sleeved rash vest and longish trunks to cover the majority of flesh. I would think that 2 hours bare chested in the sun/pool is a stretch for any lotion/cream alone.

PatriciaHolm · 14/07/2014 16:02

"a formal complaint to tesco and garner."

For what? Your inability to read a bottle?

Nothing to do with Tesco at all. Nothing to do with Garnier either; the bottle doesn't say waterproof, and says to reapply frequently. I'm also staggered you had your fair skinned children in the pool in Greece right now without rash vests on - they would have burned with any sort of lotion on only applied 2 hours ago after that sort of exposure.

I'm sorry your children are burnt, poor lads. But it's not the suncreams='s fault .

JammyTodger · 14/07/2014 16:16

I have a bottle of that very lotion in front of me. Yes, it says "very water resistant" on a label on the cap, but the instructions also clearly say "reapply frequently and generously to maintain protection, especially after swimming, perspiring or towelling." You'll get nowhere with a complaint.

JammyTodger · 14/07/2014 16:21

Actually, as a very fair-skinned ginger who got badly sunburnt many times as a kid, there's no way I'd be out in full sun for 2 hours even with SPF50 on (in Dudley, let alone Greece). I still resent my mom for letting me burn and ruining every bloody holiday. Her argument is we didn't have sunblock in those days.

OwlCapone · 14/07/2014 16:24

I feel sorry for your sons but really it is your mistake. There is nothing misleading about the bottle at all.

If you haven't learnt from your mistake, they are going to burn further with the Nivea you have bought. They will burn more easily now they are already burnt too. You need to cover them with a t shirt and keep them out of the sun.

specialsubject · 14/07/2014 16:28

no sunscreen will last two hours in the pool. They should have been wearing rash vests if not sunsuits, and should not have been in the sunlight in Greece, 3 weeks from peak UV, between 11am and 3pm.

sorry, but your mistake and their suffering. Go buy some rash vests and make sure they are in the shade in the middle of the day. Still wearing suncream.

ZenNudist · 14/07/2014 16:33

I use that brand and find it good for ease of application.

Sorry for your dc's pain but you were remiss leaving them in the pool for 2 hours. Did you never get taught that you burn worse in water? Why would you think water resistant meant it could withstand marathon pool session?!

Fairylea · 14/07/2014 16:48

I'm sorry your boys are so burnt. However as an ex skincare consultant I can say that with your son's colouring they should be out of the sun during peak hours completely and covered up in sun protective clothing with hats the rest of the time. Sorry that sounds preachy but that really is the truth. No sun cream will give adequate protection in the middle of the day in Greece especially with very fair children. There's a reason why the majority of hot countries shut during the peak hours in Europe... It seems it's only us crazy British folk that go out and play in the sun at that time.

specialsubject · 14/07/2014 17:19

mad dogs and Englishmen.....get sunburnt and then wonder why...

JammyTodger · 14/07/2014 17:29

TBH I can't quite believe that any parent of young children isn't fully aware of the advice regarding sun exposure - keep out of midday sun, cover up, sun cream doesn't provide 100% protection, reapply after water, etc. That exact advice is stated on the bottle pictured above. It's been around for years, and the message is reinforced by the media all the time. Absolutely no excuse for kids to get burned.

MillyMollyMama · 14/07/2014 21:28

I thought everyone bought the sun suits these days. Unbelievably stupid!

Hersetta427 · 15/07/2014 11:51

I can't believe you didn't put your kids in sun suits or rash vests. Mine are in them from April when we go away and in the summer months they wear long sleeve ones and waterproof hats. Sun cream frequently reapplied to any areas not covered by the suits.

I'm sorry they got burnt but you were stupidly irresponsible.

Glastokitty · 15/07/2014 11:58

Like everyone says, your kids should have been in rashies and hats, and kept in the shade too, this was way too much exposure for day one of holidays! I hope you have lots of after sun ( and a fridge to keep it in). Also keep them well hydrated. Hope this doesn't spoil your holiday, but really, forget the strongly worded letters.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/07/2014 12:02

it was a bit daft to have them out in the sun and playing in the water for that length of time without topping up the suncream and/or putting a top on them especially on the first day of the holiday when the skin is not used to the strength of the sun rays.

Dont blame the cream or the retailer, it is not their fault. The cream says it is water resistant, not waterproof and needs to be applied frequently to get full protection.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/07/2014 12:06

p.s. we have just spent 2 weeks in Tenerife using a mix of factor 50 and factor 30 on the children and they had lightly pink shoulders on day 2 so they wore tops for the next few days and then were fine after that. We took plenty of creams and slathered them on frequently - bringing them out of the pool on occasion to get dried off to put it on as we knew the cream comes off in water and makes it easier for them to burn.

RitaConnors · 15/07/2014 12:06

There isn't a sunscreen that will last two hours in water. Mine always wear rash vests and hats that tie under their chins in the pool and on the beach.

I can't see the Nivea one being any better.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/07/2014 12:08

soltan do a once a day 3 hour waterplay one but I tried it previously and wasnt that impressed. I prefer to use a normal cream and apply it frequently

Takesalongtime · 18/07/2014 19:08

My dc all very fair. When in water i use boots once a day with 3hr water play. It's a bit thick & yellow but they never burn & they all have rash tops on.
