been loads of times but mainly I shopped at the Christmas Market in December. Great clothes shopping and department stores. Lots going on so have a look here

pesme · 11/09/2006 14:29

there is a fantastic covered market with restaurants above that only serve food sourced from the market, definitely worth a visit. lots of fab restaurants can't for the life of me remember the names of any but a lonely planet should suffice. in the main shopping bit there is the most wonderful costume jewelry shop. i lost one of the earring is bought there and am still in mourning a year on. i love toulouse, it is really laid back for a french city.

see here for events through the year for family and kids

Pruni, pop down the motorway to the walled city of Carcassonne, fan- bloody- tastic. I have a little house quite close by so I have spent a lot of time around that area.

House just sold though, so cant offer a break in it as we have already dismantled most of the interior. Sorry.

It's such a good location, you could day trip to the Mediterranean coast, or head for the pyrenees if you have a car. Some wonderful river valleys on the way south in the foothills of the pyrenees. Plenty of clear rivers you can swim in (and work off some of that foie gras!)

ps TL's suggestion is a good 'un too. Carcassone worth seeing if you dont know it.

Little Village near Limoux approx 25 mins from Carcassonne.

TenaLady · 11/09/2006 18:00

Approximately an hour from Toulouse too

triplets · 16/09/2006 23:42

We have twice this year visited friends who have bought a house one hour from Toulouse, its a village called Castelnau Magnoac, absolutely charming. They rent a two bed apt within the main house, but very private, from the apt your view is of the pyrenees, soooooooo beautiful, I can let you have details if you are interested!

Astrophe · 17/09/2006 00:23

triplets, could you CAT me with the details too? DH has to go to toulouse next year for work so am thinking of taking the DCs accross for a wee holiday.

Albi - lovely town, lots of nice restaurants, easy to walk around.

cremolafoam · 18/09/2006 13:00

toulouse is a beautiful walkable city.Quite studenty feel and the buildings are all delicious pink stone.Have a look at Rick steins French odyssey page for some quirky recommendations.
Tououse is the city of violets- stock up on cake decorations!(crystalised violets) or perfume and essential oil.
Expect to eat lots of sausage and fois gras- pretty much on every menu.
Close by is the Armagnac area around Condom( no sniggering at the back) where you can stock up on this fantasic spirit.
wish I was going!

my grand-parents used to live in Carcassonne, hence many happy memories of running round the 'remparts' of the old town! My parents studied in Toulouse, it's a great place too
Stock up on a good Blanquette de Limoux
Go see a couple of Chateaux Cathars (bring walking shoes...)
eat plenty of cassoulet
L'Hotel de la Cite used to be great but haven't been for ages, so no good to you!!
