Brittany at end of July/early August

Thinking about summer holidays - probably too late! Anyway, DH thought maybe we could do driving/camping holiday in Brittany - but I wondered if it would be too busy at this time of year to risk it? How hot would it be? Also no idea where to go, we will have 2.5yr old and I will be six months pregnant! I fancy a cottage but once again it might be too late to book somewhere nice - any recommendations either way?

Gites de France are often not fully booked at this time but you may have problems getting a sociably-timed ferry crossing direct to Brittany by now. Although P & O have just introduced a fastcraft service to Caen that will cut your journey time a bit (compared to Calais). These peak time ferries COST, though...
It's not going to be as sweltering as further south, especially if you aim for the North/West of Brittany.
We had a holiday near Vannes in August three years ago and it never got above 25 degrees, perfect for us.

Marina, would you recommend any site/gite provider in particular to start looking?

florenceuk - I've had success in the past with French Connections and this year I've found one oddly named site called Homelidays. Much cheaper and the only site I found that had plenty of affordable gites in Alsace and Lorraine

This has the biggest range.
You need Self-Catering gites from the menu on the left.
Departements in Brittany include Cotes d'Armor, Finistere, Morbihan and Loire Atlantique. Ille et Vilaine is central and inland, I am assuming you want the seaside...but the whole province is pretty and inland Morbihan (Malestroit/Questembert/Rochefort) delightful.

Ooo, Tinker, URL please! We had a lot of trouble finding a gite in Alsace a couple of years ago and have put off going back because of that. We ended up near Strasbourg in a NOISY but facilities-free dormitory village...

Marina - just put Homelidays in Google and it'll come up. They seem much quirkier than other sites, think they are mostly rented by non-Brits.

We've also used French Connections - last year, and are going again in 8 weeks to another gite through them. Their website is here

Thanks everyone - will check all of these out. Camping looks bad...

We've just booked with Easy Cottages for the second year. We stayed in a lovely gite last September in Brittany and are off to Normandy this September - I can't face driving any further with 20 month old... Easy Cottages include the crossing, which was good for us, no extra messing around. They've just 'improved' their website, but the ladies on the phone are really nice and helpful.

Nome, that site looks like it has lots of availability - if the website is up to date. Thanks!
