Roundstone pick your own farm , near Worthing.

we had the most amazing afternoon digging up carrots, pulling up onions, picking sweetcorn and plums from trees laden with fruit. we also picked bramleys from apple trees with branches so low that even 2yo dd2 had to bend down to get under them.

it was such a lovely simple pleasure, and all our pickings came to under a fiver.

they're open all september, i think. do go, if you're anywhere near it.

ps what do i do with my rhubarb to ensure that it's safe to eat?

Took your advice noonar! We popped along to the Roundstone PYO farm earlier and had a lovely time. Dd2 aged two had loads of fun picking fruit and putting it into her punnet- the cost of it was amazingly reasonable too. Thanks for the recommendation.

Aah, i'm so glad you enjoyed it! we made a huge apple crumble tonight with the bramleys we picked. yum! made me feel really mumsy, as i'm not usually at all domesticated!

we actually had another lovely day out at heaven farm, nr haywards heath, today. wonderful woods, fields of clover, lakes with fish to feed... i think it got a reccommendation from alan titchmarsh, actually.we don't normally do so much at the weekends, but dd1 starts school tomorrow, so wanted to have some quality family time.

Love Roundstone but it's easy to get carried away!

It's the leaves of the Rhubarb that are poisonous, not the stalks.

rhubarb crumble and custard. Stewed Rhubarb with some lemon zest it's fabulous. Americans have it as a sauce with meat. That's also great. For it is indeed a vegetable.

thanks for the tip!

We went today!!! Had a fab time and picked sweetcorn, cooking apples, plums, eating apples, rasberries, onions, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, rhubarb and the whole lot came to less than a tenner

dd4 was so good and loved the tractor, Whoever plans to go back this year it closes on 1st October and the pumpkins will keep till halloween. The size of some of them are amazing

magnolia1 · 11/09/2006 19:08

Meant to say the pick your own closes on 1st oct but the farm shop stays open

i would say that its defo worth a trip from london, if combined with a trip to the sea. the only thing is, it's not the most central location- but not totally out in the sticks either. maybe google them and get their number, you could then ask about rail/ bus links. it's not far from worthing but may be closer to ferring or goring. MABS could help with this... good luck!

I made a rhubarb and blackberry crumble last week - seriously yummy! It's also nice with raspberries.
