Overnight accomodation in/near Dijon - Italy Road trip

We're driving from London to travel around Italy with several stops on the way. The plan is to Eurotunel with a stop overnight in/near Dijon then go on to Rome and back via the east coast then Milan. I'm trying to work out the best place to stop in France and Dijon seemed a good option. Has anyone stayed in Dijon or can recommend an alternative en route.

I'm considering stopping in Genoa for one or two nights before continuing on to Rome followed by Rimini and back to Milan before returning to London VW Sharan. The DTs will be 15 and DD 11 and are used to road trips.

Recommendations for accomodation would be gratefully received.

We stayed here in Beaune for a night once as a stopover. It was lovely. They valet park your car in a secure carpark. We have also stayed at the Novotel at Dijon Nord, which has a pool and was perfectly fine. Handy for the motorway.

I wouldn't drive into Genoa personally. Drive to Deiva and this place is lovely. You can park up and then use the train to visit the Cinque Terre villages in one direction and Portofino in the other. The coastline is stunning.

Stayed in the Mercure Hotel in Dijon last year - easy for Motorway & a short walk into Dijon. Secure underground car park as well. Very comfortable & quiet. V expensive for breakfast so go out & get stuff.

Dijon was lovely - one of the nicest small citys I've ever been to.

We stayed in a lovely wee hotel in Fixin - can't remember it's name but it was very typically French but we had the most fabulous meal there.

We love leaving the motorway at Dijon onto the RN74 (Route des Grands Crus) and then driving down through the Côte d'Or. Dh is really into his wine and it really helps to visualize the order of Burgundian wines as you drive past Gevrey Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot etc and through Nuits St George. Smile

We've done this a few times. Beaune is lovely as Portofino suggested, and we've also stayed in Macon which is lovely too. Tournus is a nice town and very handy for the autoroute. We used to get the logis de France book and stay in those- they're smaller independent hotels with a bit of character.

There are loads of lovely little villages in Burgundy which have lovely small hotels with amazing restaurants attached.

I'd agree with Portofino and advise not to stay in Genoa. We've driven through and round it lots of times and there are loads of nicer places nearby (like Portofino Grin)

Talk of Macon has reminded me of La Source Des Fees. Might be too far south on the A7 but we stayed here a couple of years ago and are returning for a stopover on Saturday. My top tip for anyone travelling in this general direction - it is LOVELY and they do free wine tasting. Have also stayed in the Novotel at Macon Nord, which was very nice, but this place wins....

Sawdays Special Places to Stay is always worth a look. He covers France and Italy.

Portofino is fine for a visit but costs ££££s to stay - as DH will attest Grin

Thanks very much. All very nice ideas. I've booked a few places but they are all through a certain website which allows free cancellations.

Once I've reserved accomodation I'll look at the actual route to drive. I'm beginning to really look forward to this trip.

Agree that Beaune is lovely for an overnight stop. I think we stayed in an Etap last time we went - cheap and cheerful.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay near
Rimini, we stayed at a gorgeous agriturismo near Rimini last year called Locanda Belvedere . It's up in the hills, very peaceful, run by a friendly young family and the food was out of this world.
