It's much easier than you might think....definitely recommend that you pre-pay your tolls especially if you are travelling on a busy date www.saneftolling.co.uk. Also if you book with www.ernalow.co.uk you get an automatic upgrade to flexiplus on the Eurotunnel so you don't have to stress if you miss your booked crossing which again is fabulous if you are going over school holidays.

Thanks Skilover, will check out the toll tag, a few people have mentioned that, will look into either channel tunnel or ferry, a long way to go but getting excited !!!

We did it last year. Got an evening tunnel crossing, slept overnight in a formula 1 place a couple of hours south of Calais.

Set off early the next morning. Traffic was terrible the nearer we got to the Alps. Sat for ages not moving in traffic. Saturdays are the worst day for transfers I guess. We got to courchevel at 10pm and everything was shut. Couldn't buy any milk to have a cup of tea or any food to have dinner with. So take better supplies than we did!

yes, try to travel the bulk of it on a Sunday, not a Saturday. Flexiplus at least on the way back eases the way. Make sure you practise getting your snow chains on and off before you need them. Best of all get winter tyres on your car, we could get up and down slopes that 4x4s couldn't, without resorting to chains.

You really, really need winter tyres and chains. They are both a necessity.

Winter tyres can be really useful in the UK. once we bought them we got them put on in Nov and teken off in March and have never had problems in the ice and snow here. Might as well use them and save wear and tear on the Summer ones.

Agreed - they are great. Driving on normal tyres in snow and ice is bonkers. Much as we love skiing in italy we have stopped going now for the sole reason that you can't rent winterised cars from the eastern italian airports.
