I just use a debit card in the cash machine abroad

Chocotrekkie · 22/06/2014 19:09

Moneysavingexpert expert.com has a thing where you type in how many you want and it tells you the best place to buy them

We ordered some from the post office online and collected them in the shop - was one of the cheapest last weekend.

ssd · 22/06/2014 21:37

doesnt it cost you to withdraw money with a debit card abroad

M&S do very good rates

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 22/06/2014 21:40

We use ATMs abroad too

iwantgin · 22/06/2014 21:41

Travelex always has good rates. Generally two cents or so more to the pound than Post Office etc.

Free delivery to your door too (over a certain limit).

am confused, MSE says the halifax card which I have but how can I get euros with this without paying interest on them?

ilovepowerhoop · 22/06/2014 22:06

we got ours from Debenhams - went online to get the best rate and then took the print out in to collect them. We will also use a credit card abroad if required

www.halifax.co.uk/travel/help-guidance/using-debit-credit-cards-abroad/ - the Clarity card doesnt seem to charge interest or other fees when abroad

Bunbaker · 22/06/2014 23:04

The post office usually comes out as one of the best, and in my case, it is very convenient, so I just go there. I save money in petrol costs because I can walk there.

caroldecker · 23/06/2014 00:28

Ther is a charge, but the exchange rate is better.

for example, barclays debit card charges 2.99% here but gives you a rate of 1.24938 here. so £103 gives you €125.
The post office is currently offering 1.208, so £103 gets you €124

Broadly speaking no difference, but you can more easily get the money you want through the cash machine than trying to guess earlier and you lose if you want to re-convert excess euro on your return

Iflyaway · 23/06/2014 00:32

Whatever or wherever you exchange, there will be a cost...

or did someone think money is free lol

ssd · 23/06/2014 16:46

have ordered them from the post office

thanks to everyone here

Just use your cards abroad, it's usually cheaper, about 2%. Ask your bank but it's usually the cheapest way these days.

Bunbaker · 23/06/2014 17:56

"Just use your cards abroad,"

It depends where you go. Tavernas in quiet resorts in Greece want cashthese days, and the ATMs don't always have money in them.

BertieBotts · 23/06/2014 17:59

I suppose but most places in Europe take cards - how would the locals manage their money?

Bunbaker · 23/06/2014 18:13

I don't know. I was just following advice given to me when we went to Crete at half term. Greece's financial situation is still a bit wobbly and they want hard cash from tourists, not credit cards.

ilovepowerhoop · 23/06/2014 18:17

as we are going to be in a resort/hotel with not a lot of access to cash machines we tend to take mainly cash and then just have credit cards for emergencies.

Hobby2014 · 23/06/2014 18:26

This morning, on This Morning, Grin, they did a section on money whilst abroad etc what cards are best, how to get the best rate etc, might be worth finding in catch up or whatever as was quite interesting.

AmazingDisgrace · 25/06/2014 21:24

Halifax Clarity is the best CC to use abroad but for cash we use the money saving expert calculator too. We also have a FairFX euro card that we preload
