We went to Nerja last August - lovely place! We were there for 2 weeks and had nothing but crystal clear seas every day! There's a lot of scaremongering about the sewage, I wouldn't worry! I certainly would not have entered the sea if there was but a whiff Wink
Whereabouts are you staying? Our nearest beach was Burriana; we found it too busy so drove a bit further down the coast towards Torrox; lovely little quiet beaches there, the kids (teens) had a great time snorkelling.
It all depends on what you like to do on hols; it's not an action-packed resort by any means, but we found enough to do. Will you have a car?? There's the Nerja Caves (interesting for a couple of hours - and cool!!!Grin)
There's also a Waterpark nearby but we didn't bother with that. The Donkey Sanctuary in the town is worth a visit for an hour or so if you like animals (horses, cats, pigs etc); free entrance, you just take a bag of carrots or pay a couple of euros for a bowl of feed). They're so tame; it's run by some UK ladies.
Nightlife in Nerja is lovely, laid-back and great for people watching; there's no promenade as such, but a beautiful tiled walkway towards the sea to the 'Balcon' where you get a panoramic view of the bay.
Any more info you need, just ask!!

sorry to take so long to come back to this! thyank you-that all sounds very reassuring. I THINK the villa is in capistrano? or that direction anyway, we will have a car yes so will be able to go exploring a bit.

My sons will almost certainly want to go to the waterpark-thanks for the tip!

We stayed in Capistrano (in an independent villa - not El Capistrano which is a really nice complex of apartments)
It's a good area, safe and quiet but a bit of a trek into town and fairly steep walk home, so good you have a car. At the bottom end of Capistrano there's a few bars/restaurants and a couple of hotels (at the roundabout) - there's also a public tennis club with bar and restaurant. San Juan de Capistrano is slightly higher up, again with a small hotel complex and a few bars/restaurants, great atmosphere with lots of kids around (think one of the bars is called Rockys).
In town, there's loads of good places to eat - Pinnichios is highly recommended for fab pizzas in an outdoor courtyard setting - very child- friendly! This post is all about food and drink GrinWink
