I posted this in chat and got 1 reply! I am wondering how much money to take with me to Turkey this year. I am going self catering with 4 kids, so 5 of us.
It might seem a silly thing o ask but I really haven't got a clue as haven't been abroad for over 10 years!!!!
thanks

Last time I went I just took sterling and transferred it over there but one year they advised me to do the USD. No idea what they tell you to do now.

We went self-catering to Spain last year for a week. There are 4 of us including two teens. We ate out every night, we both drink and we took just under €1000 for the week. We didn't do many trips, except a glass bottomed boat job which was dirt cheap. We did have some left over at the end of the week which we recklessly spent at the airport in Duty Free as it wasn't enough to warrant changing it back. However, this was Spanish Spain and whilst touristy, it was not really catering to British/Irish/German/Scandi tourists so there was much less on offer.

For a family of 5, I would be budgeting at least £100 a day. We are certainly not wanton spenders on holiday. The kids cannot have free reign of the ice cream stall and we try to shop in the supermarket for foods for breakfast and lunch, saving our spending money for a meal out each evening. We also try not to do loads of trips - may be one we all decide we'd like to do, but that would be it. If you want to do something like that most days, then you'd easily be able to double that budget. Me, I'm happy with my Kindle, lying in the sunshine by the pool!

I live close to the border of the trnc and travel in Turkey quite a bit. We took euros and traveled with my parents who were over from the UK. There was no bureau de change in our local airport so they used their sterling debit cards in cashpoints in town and we exchanged euros in the hotel and bought things shopping on our sterling debit card as our cypriot cards don't work in Turkey.

You can't buy travellers cheques in tl and they're replaceable which is why usd travellers cheques are always sold by travel agents. But you can change them everywhere you just lose a bit in fees when you buy and sell them. Usd is an acceptable currency in Turkey still though but I wouldn't bother. I think it depends on your insurance policy and your preference to carrying cash about.

If I was op, I'd take a bit to see me through and use the card the rest of the time to avoid carrying cash about or leaving it in the room.
