Boston - what to do? Too hot in August?

We are planning a shortish break to Boston end of August, will it be too hot and humid? What are the best things to do with dc aged 11 & 15? Is it worth booking a hotel with a pool?
We have had a couple of trips to NYC which went down a storm with dc so I'm hoping this will be equally fun.
Oh, also is it worth going out to town to beach resorts? Have heard there are a lot of mozzies....

It is very hot and humid at that time of year. We spend a week there over 4th July holidays and it was well over 100 degrees every day and very energy saping. The best things we did though was hire a car and spent a couple of days at the beach along the cape - the humidity seemed to disappear and we had great crab and seafood - we also spent a great day on the water whale watching from boston harbour. Hats and lots of suncream needed though.

You should also go and see the red sox play - maybe an evening game so you don't roast in the sun like we did. It is an American institution and has to be done. We also took the T (boston subway) over and wandered around harvard and visited some great burger joints that we saw on 'dinners, drive in's and dives'. We didn't have any issue with mossies. We also did a duck boat tour which your kids might like.

Hmm, sounds hot, was hoping for a city break to wander around and see the sights but it's draining in that kind of heat. Thanks Hersetta427.

Go up the John Hancock Tower. The lifts are crazy fast and the view from the top is incredible (and air-conditioned!)

You could also go whale watching - there'll be a nice area breeze and I've always seen lots of whale action whenever I've done it there.

Quincy's Basement is always worth a look, and again, it's air conditioned. Faneuil Hall is also great for pottering round and eating - should be reasonably cool as it's mostly under cover.

Also second the pp who suggested wandering around Harvard. Just be prepared for your teens to decide they're going to uni in America after that!

*sea breeze, not area!

That all sounds great thanks! Air con is pretty amazing in the US so I am sure we will survive!

End of August can be pretty nice IMO ( lived there for 5 years).

One of my favourite things in Boston is the Mapparium. It's in the Mary Baker Eddy Library on Mass Ave. Basically it's a huge glass globe you can wake through the middle of. It's really awesome.

Catch the ferry from the aquarium over to the Charelrstown Navy Yard. You can see the Constituion and walk up to Bunker Hill. In my day the ferry had a cooler with beer over the summer, and a cold one on the top deck on the way home from work was bliss.

You can also hop on the blue line T to Wonderland. The beach is full of college kids but not bad for a bit of sunbathing.

Oh, and Regina Pizza in the North End (there are a couple other branches too but the North End is the original) is the mother of all pizzas. It's how it should be. No other pizza compares!

I went in May and found it hot - was there for 3 days and it was 1.5 days too many - not a lot to explore

Take the speedboat ferry to cape cod from central Boston, its a lovely breezy ride and have lunch on the beach at cape cod. Then potter about and take the ferry back for tea. Blissful day out. Love boston!
