looking at doing one next year
been on cruises before and like them as you get to see different places
so we're interested in doing a multi-trip and would like your good and bad bits and any tips/ideas please? Also interested to know who you booked with.

thinking-
Dubai with Cape town or Sri Lanka (not Mauritius though as we've been)
USA twin cities
cruise and stay
or????

rough budget £5000 not including spending money for 2 adults 2 teens (13 and 15 soon )

For next Easter so we can do at least 8 nights up to 10 (can't do longer)and would like long haul not Europe. (flight up to 11 hrs max)

New York combined with Caribbean island or mexico

ShanghaiDiva · 16/06/2014 13:09

Washington DC and somewhere in California
Hong Kong/KL/Singapore/Bangkok with somewhere more relaxing
e.g Bali, Phuket, Koh Samui, Borneo, Penang, Langkawi

mummymeister · 16/06/2014 15:07

Florida keys twinned with any where else basically. what about Canada - Vancouver and the rockies? couple of European city breaks - Rome Barcelona, Paris?

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 16/06/2014 15:23

I think there's enough to do in Cape Town without adding on another country, you could combine with a few days in the. Also one of the good things about Cape Townnis the great time of the flights and no jet lag so it seems a shame to split the flight.

Cruise and stay options are
Dubai and cruise
Florida and Bahamas cruise
L.A and Mexican pacific cruise
Caribbean island such as Jamacia and then cruise

Twin centre options

New York and Florida
Cuba, beach and Havanna
Rio and iguassa falls
I usually choose where I want to go, ring up virgin for a price and then see if I can do it cheaper. Sometimes I can and sometimes I can't. For instance my Cape Town package was the same price as just the flights.

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 16/06/2014 15:25

That should read Cape Town and a few days in the Winelands.

foxdongle · 16/06/2014 21:29

hi thanks everyone, think you have sorted the next 5 years for us!
lots of interesting ideas-I've been googling :)

like the look of quite a few- Florida keys, Mexico, Bahamas and New York/Washington dc. also Cuba and Vancouver worth investigating.
Would love far east-but would want longer there tbh.

agree chicken re Cape town - thought it might be pushing it to do Dubai as well (Dh's idea) also I always thought virgin expensive so that's interesting, will try them.

Hi,

We did Cuba but not as a twin centre as such we just based ourselves in Varadero and did 3 different overnight stops from there one to Havana then a kind of jungle trek then a trip to Cayo Largo. We still talk about it years later. You'd have the same experience just doing a resort and Havana though.

We also looked at florida/Bahamas cruise twin centre too but never got round to it. I also like the look of the keys and the cruise that goes from Fort lauderdale to Mexico.

Id like to see more of the west coast of the states too though. San Diego and San Francisco maybe?

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 17/06/2014 11:00

mrsnec you Cuba trip sounds fab.

Heels99 · 17/06/2014 13:42

Mrsnec is the food in Cuba as bad as people say?

mrsnec · 17/06/2014 13:55

Thanks Chicken and Heels I'd never heard that and it didn't bother us at all. But having said that, dh and I are the least fussiest eaters I know and because the hotel in Varadero was a Sol so despite me knowing I was going to Cuba I was still thinking of the sol hotels I stayed in Spain as a child. we had very low Expectations! There was a bit of meat and rice and strange root veg, lots of black beans hardly any salad if I remember rightly but the fresh fruit was good. The choice in the hotel in Havana was excellent with things like a massive snapper on the buffet in the evening and I remember food on excursions being good too we even had lobster on a boat trip. We didn't really go to restaurants as such though, not as much as I would anywhere else.

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 17/06/2014 14:16

I enjoyed the food in Cuba. In Havana we had a couple of lovely sea food meals and quite a few cocktails. In the resort part of the holiday we stayed in a hotel called Playa Costa Verde and enjoyed the food. There was always something the DC and ourselves liked at the buffet and we had a really fun night at a the Japanese restaurant there with some Canadians we made friends with. I think the hotel had 3 restaurants you could book which made a nice change.

Hi we've booked;

Miami for a few nights then cruise to Bahamas and Key west with Royal Caribbean. We've had to change to Feb half term as DH now got a project on for the whole of next April. Good in a way as not so long to wait :)
Thanks for your ideas-will keep them in mind for other trips.

foxdongle · 19/06/2014 13:49

Thanks :)
after googling Key West (wouldn't have thought of it) and Bahamas on your recs, we were sold. the waterpark Atlantis looks really good for dcs I've seen it recommended on here before, I believe you can just go for the day.

might start a new thread with - tips for/anyone been on Royal Caribbean? or Miami best bits Grin

We've done a couple of nights in Miami, followed by the Key West / Bahamas cruise on Majesty of the Seas. It was fab, you'll have a great time.

Favourite things in Miami were jogging along South Beach at sunrise (jet lag !), walking along the Art Deco district, people watching in Lincoln Mall, and the Thriller power boat ride out of Bayside (cheesy but a bit Miami Vice !).

Loved Key West, don't miss the Little White House, and Earnest Hemingways house, plus a walk to the Southernmost point of the USA. Also Key Lime pie at Kermits.

The trip to Atlantis was good, your teens would probably love it, but it's very expensive to book an organised tour with Royal Caribbean. I think you can do it cheaper by getting passes to the aquapark by booking a day room at a nearby hotel ( i forget which one), but check out Cruise Critic, there will be lots of information on there.
Another good trip there is Swimming with Dolphins, that was amazing.

Coco Cay, if you are stopping there, is a great beach day, very busy in the main area of the beach, but if you walk on round along the beach for a bit, it gets much quieter, and prettier.

Coming back into Miami, we had an evening flight home, but docked very early in the morning. We booked a tour with RC to the Everglades, fairly expensive for what it was, but it was furn, meant that the suitcases were looked after, and we were dropped at the airport by lunchtime. From there we caught a shuttle bus to the Dolphin Mall, had lunch there, and did a bit of window shopping. Couldn't buy much as our suitcases were already checked in, but it was a nice way to spend the final few hours rather than hanging about the airport.

Sorry for the essay, hope it might give you some ideas. Enjoy the trip, i'd love to go back !

foxdongle · 19/06/2014 22:37

budgiegirl thanks for all the info, lots of ideas.
that's exactly the same cruise, so yes we're stopping at Coco cay-good tip,

That's a good idea about the Everglades trip, I think we would enjoy that. did you go on an airboat ride ?
:)

OP posts:
budgiegirl · 19/06/2014 22:58

foxdongle yes, we did the airboat ride, it was included as part of the trip. Very touristy and quite tacky (I wouldn't order the food!) , but fun, always wanted to do it since I was a kid. The guides on the boats were a laugh, and it was great seeing the alligators. I wasn't so keen on the animal show after, just not my thing really, but I was glad we went.

Have a Coco Loco drink on Coco Cay, it was delicious.

foxdongle · 20/06/2014 13:11

sounds like fun. IKWYM about the animal shows- can't stand them.
