Has anyone been to any of the European Christmas marktets? Really fancy going this year, possibly to Germany, but am a bit bewildered with all the different cities. Any recommendations? TIA

Bordeaux has a nice Christmas market, not very busy either and the city is lovely, esp at Christmas!

bruges has one you can go by euro star. We have an interational christmas marlet in Aberdeen. probably not the same atmosphere though {grin}

Apparantly the one in Nuremberg is really lovely and I can imagine it is as I have been there in the Summer and it even seemed Christmassy then!Also Air Berlin do cheap flights to there and Lidl are doing a special offer atm on Air Berlin flights.
Hmm I seem to be trying to convince you to go, maybe it's really me who wants to go.......

I used to go to the one in Munich every year (I used to spend a lot of time there on work) and thought it was fab - not too big, very friendly etc.

Cologne has a wonderful market, actually it is four different ones. They are supposed to be slightly different (i.e. one is a children's one) but tbh, I couldn't find a great deal of difference between them. They are lovely for different Christmas decorations and wooden toys.

Lille is lovely - and you can go by Eurostar as well.

We went to Koln and Bonn markets last year, and they were both v. good. Koln especially for the market that is around the cathedral.
If you fancy Germany, I'd recommend getting in touch with the German Tourist Board (I did it thro their website) and they'll send you some great brochures and maps and all sorts. I did this last yr when deciding which markets to visit, and the info is really good. They've already sent me this years brochure (typical German efficiency!!)

Bruges was packed when we went. Stockholm is lovely - Christmas market in Skansen, a kind of zoo/park with Scandinavian animals, dancing to join in, reconstructed Swedish buildings. Ice rinks, snow if you're lucky. Wintery without the tat (unless you find ToysRUs, that is!)
