and one with mobility probs (finds stairs difficult)

weather is crap and ds has decided he wants to go to a castle, of all things-but I am thinking it will be dry at least. Does anyone know which one is more suitable for this age range though? and dd with her step phobia?

or shall I just chuck them on the train and head to the natural history museum

can only think of Leeds and Hever

Leeds is beautiful and has a maze but can't remember if it has many steps (sorry, not much help!)

Walmer castle is nice & it has lovely grounds for them to run around in.

Bodiam castle .. take bread for the fish in the moat

its beautiful .. but its a ruin

quite flat up there ..

bodiam castle

east sussex not kent (not much difference is there)

As castles tend to come with spiral staircases, I think I might head for the NHM, especially as it may be quite quiet today.

Whereabouts in Kent are you? Dover is big and has a lot in it, but also plenty of stairs,. Deal is small but atmospheric - iirc there aren't very many stairs there. It's quite near Walmer if you need to stretch the day out a bit -I think Walmer has Wellington's wellies. Tonbridge is another nice small one.

Bodiam could be combined with a trip on the Kent and East Sussex Railway - the station's a fairly short walk from the castle.

Well they loved the train and Bodiam is lovely and they enjoyed looking at the fish in the moat. We could only make it halfway up the 'up only' staircase at Bodiam and I couldnt take her any fiurther as I was scared we would all fall so i bellowed down the staircase that we were coming down to be met by a giggling national trust volouteer Loved it though, thanks for the recommendations everyone

early night tonight me thinks!
