My 18yr old dd is moving to auckland for 2 years to be an au pair but we are unsure about how many clothes she should bring, should she just have a few basic outfits or as much as she can fit in her bag? Also what are so,e essentials we might forget to take?

My sister lives in NZ, clothes are fairly expensive there (though very good quality) as there are no budget shops like we have. Weather is same as here so she will need summer and winter clothes - ime they don't tend to have central heating as such, so bear that in mind!

My sister misses simple things like cheap vest tops, and jeans. They do lovely outdoor clothes - merino wool thermals, etc so would prob buy that kind of thing over there

they have shops in NZ and she certainly can't take clothing for 2 years. Plenty of charity shops (op shops, I think) although with the smaller population you don't get the big cheap'n'nasty emporia that we do in the uk.

and yes, Kiwi houses usually have thin walls and very little heating, so she'll need to toughen up. That said it won't be that cold in Auckland. The hostel owners always have a giggle at the wussy Europeans who expect warm bedrooms.

big thing is plenty of sunscreen but that is a good deal there. Also she needs to check the situation with any medication and to take a spectacle/contact lens prescription with her.

but NZ is really quite civilised. :-)
