malaria drugs and side effects

Unfortunately Malarone made me so ill I could not enjoy my holiday at all. Has anyone had a bad reaction to that but taken other malaria drugs without a problem?

I have tried all of them and had bad reactions unfortunately. I have been able to avoid them for a number of years but tend to have to pick the least worst option. ask your gp about others and see if you can try them out. needs a few months planning before your trip but may be worth it. the drugs make me really sick plus hallucinations and poor sleep. would definitely suggest you go and chat as soon as you can to try and find one that is the least worst before you go.

at the moment I'm avoiding anywhere that requires malaria drugs but that is rather restrictive. Thank you for the response.

Vibramycin is what my DC took when they were in Vietnam 2 years ago. My dd felt a little nausea for the first 30 mins, but was fine the rest of the day. DS had no problems at all. He'd taken mephaquin when he was in India, but they made him feel ill all day.
They started the Vibramycin 3 days before they left, took it everyday and then for 2 weeks upon return.

There are loads of places that are malaria free. Or do you only travel long haul?

No I don't only travel long haul but it prevents me from visiting some of the places I'd like to visit so it's restrictive. Do you have a chip on your shoulder about long haul travel?

I've been to plenty of long-haul places that are non malarial!

different people have different reactions, but all the reactions are better than getting malaria. Even the psychotic effects of Lariam.

if you want to see the malarial places you have to take this risk. And of course dengue is endemic anywhere tropical.

You cannot pick and choose which anti malarial drug to take. Precise ones are required for different areas so you won't necessarily get Malarone. None of us has ever had a problem with it and you take it for less time than lots of the others. I would check which drug is recommended for where you want to go. Any drug will be better than getting malaria or wishing you had been to a place when you are older.

You may have already tried this alreadytaken, but we always take our malaria tablets when going to bed, and hopefully sleep through any symptoms. Having said that, we were all fine with Malarone.
