Train seat reservations AFTER you've booked tickets?

Bloody train ticket booking websites! I'm hoping an experienced train traveller can help me.

Ok, only thetrainline.com seem to be selling train tickets more than three months in advance of my chosen date of travel. While I can buy the return ticket, I can't make a seat reservation as it's too far in advance (East Coast run the train that I need to get -Edinburgh-Kings Cross). Does anyone know whether I can reserve seats (via TheTrainline, East Coast, at the actual train station ticket office etc) after I've bought the tickets from The Trainline, once the seating reservations become available? I don't really want to wait because the price of the train tickets will go up.

Also, does anyone know why train companies don't sell the tickets more than three months in advance despite running trains along the same tracks and at the same times for years and years?!!! GGGRRRRRR!!!!

I feel your pain. It is so frustrating to be able to buy tickets but not reserve seats isn't it.

I am trying to book a trip to London in August and can reserve seats going, but not coming back. We are returning the next day and you would think that as most people buy return tickets it would be possible to reserve seats on the return journey at the same time.

I rang the Trainline today and they couldn't help. I have also looked on East Midland trains and I can't book return seats yet. Grrr!

I did manage to do this with Virgin - got in touch after booking and was able to reserve. So hopefully the other companies also do it.

I will ring East Midlands trains tomorrow and see how I get on.

Bun baker, that's even MORE annoying if you can book for one date but not for the following one! So ridiculous.

Virgin used to run the line, Special, and they were great. Can't for the life of me work out why most companies have this silly three month thing. Some of us have control issues like to plan in advance. Smile
