Turkey - ok for someone who is coeliac?

I've been looking for a holiday in August and there are some good deals for Turkey. I went years ago and really liked it, but dh is coeliac and has crohns and I don't know if restaurants etc will be able to cater for this. Has anyone been to Turkey and been able to eat gluten free? We'll be self catering but don't plan to cook much - we want to eat out. Also, is it still cheap? I know it used to be brilliant value for money, is is still? We're on a bit of budget as dh has been ill and off work.

If it's self catering you will be fine. I have Crohn's and we went bed and breakfast and I suffered with the breakfasts they offered and ended up buying breakfast every morning. Lunch and evening was easy as it's a lot of near with salad and chips. Hope that helps.

Thanks ilove, that's really helpful. Smile he does eat a lot of meat so it sounds like he'd be ok.

Turkey isn't as cheap as it used to be but it is still good value for money. Alcohol is quite expensive unless you drink beer.

Thanks Sootica, we're not big drinkers anymore so if food is good value we're happy. Have you been in August? How hot is it? I've only been in June and September so not at the peak of summer.

I used to live there :)

It does get very hot in August, very often high 30s, possible even low 40s so bring loads of sun cream!

High 30s is fine for me, as long as I have a pool to jump in when I'm hot I'm happy Smile

I met an Australian who was coeliac in a part of Turkey that was off the beaten tourist track. He had a little card he carried around which explained in Turkish what his condition was and what his dietary requirements were. It was a good idea as quite a few Turkish dishes have some stealth gluten products in them eg breadcrumbs in kebab meat.

He said he'd had no problems but that having the card was extremely helpful. Presumably if you're in a more touristy area, it'll be even easier. There will be a lot that your dh can comfortably eat - and Turkish food is lovely!

I did wonder if getting the card would work. I think you can get an app for it now too so that might be worth doing. Turkey is so lovely that I really hope we can get it sorted so that he feels confident about going.

I went to Thassos in Greece last year with crohns and a colostomy bag and was fine. Not sure about Turkey so will watch with interest :}
