Toddler won't sleep in travel cot. Where do we put her?!

We have a travel cot booked at our villa, but DD has decided she will no longer sleep in a cot. To be fair, she never slept well in a travel cot. We can't take anything bulky/heavy as we are flying.

What can we take for DD to sleep on, any suggestions?

Couldn't you just put her in a bed? Or on a mattress on the floor?

PickledLily · 30/05/2014 11:59

There aren't any spare beds. I guess we could use the travel cot base with a duvet/blanket wrapped over it, but it will be a bit hard. Or I could ask the owners if they have a spare mattress we could use.

There must be lots of people in this situation, what does everyone do? Do they just book a bed for the toddler?

Toddler ready bed? Bit expensive for what they are but toddlers seem to like them. I think they still sell them in great little trading or JojoMaman. Or even ebay.

JodieGarberJacob · 30/05/2014 12:05

Push the beds together and just share? Or make dp sleep on the floor? Wink

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:06

I ws going to say a Ready bed or if it's an apartment, take the cushions of the sofa and stuff them together into a fitted sheet to stop them splitting apart. Put a blanket on a lilo?

My two would sleep anywhere so it was never an issue :o

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:08

I am not sure how old a toddler you are talking here, but when mine were very young, we used to carry about a baby sheepskin and they would happily sleep on that anywhere.

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:09

...and the benefit of a sheepskin is that you can put it in the buggy as a "liner" and therefore it forms part of the buggy rather than your luggage allowance :)

Rockchick1984 · 30/05/2014 12:10

How old is she?

scarletforya · 30/05/2014 12:14

Yep, sheepskin. Rolls up and is very light.

PickledLily · 30/05/2014 12:15

Some good ideas, thanks. The toddler is 2, so a bit big for a sheepskin. She does like to do 360s in her sleep, so would probably spin off across the room.

Ready bed would be great, DD would love it. How heavy/bulky are they? I guess I really only need to pack a bikini Grin

DH sleeping on the floor - it will probably come to that if DD decides she wants to be in our bed!

That 2nd one looks like it would do the job (the monkey looks very happy Grin) and one of the reviewers says it is lightweight.

Thank you

I would take a sleeping mat and sleeping bag. Sleeping mats are only about 20, and will come in handy lots in the future, when she's a Brownie!

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:25

Might be a bit of a squeeze to fit your OH onto when the toddler claims his bed :o

....but he can always cuddle the monkey for comfort ....

PickledLily · 30/05/2014 12:27

Ah, yes, thermarests! She won't bounce up and down on it either. I'll look into them. Thanks.

Ready beds are brilliant, I love the way you ail them in so they can't roll out, but can get out easily if they need the loo.

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:31

I think the only problem with a sleeping mat (and the sheepskin etc) is that the OP says she is a bit of a restless sleeper so she woukd likely move of it and be found in a random corner/under the bed etc.

Unless you did an inflatable mat and popped it inside a pop up sun shelter - so like an indoor tent?

addictedtosugar · 30/05/2014 12:31

OK, for MN, I have just stood on the scales with and without our readybed. NB ours is old, and they apper to have changed the style since then. Anyway, it weighs less than 2kg, with the punp in the bag as well.
Size wise, it would fit in a standard size rucksac, but is a bit rounder.

Brilliant addictedtosugar, thank you.

I was thinking about packing the suntent too. Don't know how big the room is. DH will be delighted at all the toddler kit in the suitcase!

my boys have this sort of thing:

www.gooutdoors.co.uk/camping/sleeping-mats/self-inflating-mats

One of them has a shorter one i.e. you dont really need the mat for your feet and it folds up pretty small.

They are actually pretty comfy.

soontobeslendergirl · 30/05/2014 12:35

Ach, all he'll need is 2 pairs of swimshorts and a couple of t - shirts - you need to make sure there is room for 3 changes a day for the toddler and yourself :) - and of course alll the different shoes and sandals.... Wink

noramum · 30/05/2014 13:00

I would try out a ReadyBed before buying one. DD hated them, she is an unruly sleeper as well and hated being restricted and the noise woke us and her up all the time.

Our friends' DCs can live in them if they are allowed.

I would try to get a blow up mattress instead, they normally pack up small as well and when your child is 2 it has its own luggage allowance, don't forget.

jamtoast12 · 30/05/2014 13:56

At that age there's no way I'd be carrying a ready bed around, she will easily fit in a bed with you and your dp.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 30/05/2014 17:14

We went to holiday last June when DD was just over 2. She started in the sofa bed every night, and ended up between us in the big bed. Hotel beds are quite large and should fit three of you easily.

I am going to get a sleeping mat next year when I visit my parents. They don't have an extra mattress lying around. I'm sure she'd be fine on the floor.
