We are looking to take our 8 and 6 year olds to Lapland this Dec and would love to hear any recommendations and any 'must do' or 'avoids'

I would like:

Authentic Santa (preferably with a real beard Grin)
Nice hotel - smallish
Small resort
Husky sled rides
Reindeer sled ride
Ice skating

Think that's my wish list. Obvs it is all about me and not the kids Wink

Have a look at trips to Saariselka. Pretty small resort which we liked. No ice skating though but we did do ice hockey on the day trip to see Santa.as well as ice fishing, ice sculptures, reindeer ride, husky sledging etc. also did skidoos but that was an extra cost for most people.
We went for Christmas itself and it got down to -28 on Xmas Eve. It is not normally quite as cold a couple of weeks earlier.
They give you appropriate clothing but we still took thermals and layers. Normal ski gloves are useless there when they get wet. We had thin wool gloves under the mittens they gave us which really helped.
We went with Esprit but booked it through another company which worked out cheaper and did 4 days.
Food was a bit hit and miss. We are happy to eat reindeer but not everyone was. And we had Frankfurters with every meal -even Christmas lunch. Meals were buffet style. If you want alcohol buy it at duty free at the airport or go to the off licence in the town when you get there. It is really expensive in the hotels. Think 50 euros for a pretty awful bottle of wine.
Dd has been twice and loved it. Watch out for the elves at the airport Smile
