NYC apartment rental

Hello

Planning a trip to New York next March. There will be 8 of us, mixed ages, and wondered if it would make more sense to rent an apartment rather than 3 rooms in a hotel? Has anyone ever done this and could recommend a web site to look for something suitable?

Yes, that's what we have done in the past. Wouldn't do it any other way any more. Can't remember who we booked through but trip advisor will assist in your research.

We stayed in a house when we went to NYC. We stayed in Jamaica Bay which is on the outskirts and took 45mins to downtown. We had a great time.

Many users of the NYC forums on Tripadvisor would advise you not to rent an apartment there and for good reason.

Renting apartments in NYC is not like renting in other parts of the world. Many such short term rentals are infact illegal and sites do not check whether such listings are actually genuine and are as stated. Many apartments too are old and small. Such short term rentals violate many NYC building laws and building regulations. Apart from that the residents of these buildings are actively prohibited from renting their home to tourists.

agree with Attila. would normally recommend airbandb but not for new York. some hotels have appartments in them, this would be a much better idea more expensive but at least you would have some come back if there was a problem.

Definitely not. Check out the numerous threads here on tripadvisor about it. It's illegal and you could lose a lot of money

NYC has had a problem recently with a new law that's cracking down on AirB&B. But I believe it only applies to rentals of less than a month. You don't mention how long your stay is. It occurs to me that if your vacation were for, say, three weeks, you might do better in terms of money with renting an apartment for a month than three weeks of three hotel rooms.

However, you do have to be careful about things like fraud. I wonder if you'd do better with something like VRBO or Cyberrentals, instead of AirB&B.
