CARAVAN HOMES IN SAUNDERSFOOT OR BREAN AREA

We are thinking of buying a static caravan as a holiday home to be used most weekends (and until DS starts school as often as possible throughout the season).
Due to the frequency we would want to use it we have narrowed it down to two areas. Saundersfoot in South Wales and Brean/Watchet/Minehead in Somerset. Somerset is the quickest for us to drive to with Saundersfoot being a half hour more.
We are looking for a small to medium family run site by the sea that does not allow subletting. It appears to be the bigger holiday sites that have a website, so I am not finding much although I am sure there are many.
A pool would be nice but not essential.
Can anybody recommend anywhere?

We just bought a Toyota Hilux and we were in Byron Bay last weekend.

We love our caravan journeys. Looking forward to more this year.

What about here www.swallowtree.co.uk/, we holidayed here for over 20 years with the family and still love it.

Skoorbland caravan park is the cheapest in Brean, it doesn't have any facilities or sub letting, although it does have direct access to the beach, a childrens play area and a very nice owner! It's in easy walking distance to the centre/fair but far enough away to be able to relax! Next door to the best pub/club with best food too.

Unity Farm (Holiday Resort Unity) has the most facilities but is the most expensive by a long shot. It also has 10 and 15 year site rules which are ridiculous when you think a static can easily last 20 or 30. The House family own half of Brean and it shows.

Northern Farm is probably the next biggest and owns a large touring and static site as well as a smaller static site next door to Skoorbland. The Seagull (best pub) and Scotty's bar are also owned by this family.

Diamond farm is too far out from all the facilities, as is Brean Down Park.

Golden Sands is good and used to have a pool (poss still have), they def have caravans for sale.

You don't really need a site pool in Brean because you have Brean Splash and Burnham Pool close by, but if that is a plus for you then you can buy yearly membership to both pools.

Anna - Byron Bay looks gorgeous. Maybe a place to visit when our son has grown up. I do quite like the idea of a tourer but I am also quite keen on a home from home.

Squarepegina - swallow tree looks fabulous, but I would imagine the annual fees are expensive. I will contact them as maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.

LtEveDallas - Thank you so much for your suggestions. If any more come to mind please let me know.
We are going down this weekend to take a look at the area. I have not been down in that region for approx 16 years (excl a few day trips to Weston-Super-Mare). My last time was at Butlins in Minehead
I do agree about the pool and if it was a deal breaker I would rather an indoor than an outdoor to cover when the weather is poor.
You seem to know the area well. Do you live down there or do you holiday there?

We have a static down there, and do pretty much what you intend to do (in fact we are going down tomorrow Smile). We go down in the school hols and any weekends we can manage. We have even planned our house move to make it easier for us to get there.

I've been going to Brean since I was 6/7 and I'm now 42 with a family of my own. I've seen it grow and still love it. Yes it's chavtastic, yes it's Birmingham-On-Sea, yes it's tacky and loud. But it's friendly, fun, busy, beautiful in places (the beach, the dunes, the fort, the downs, the nature reserve) and it's easy travelling to lots of places.

It's very child friendly. Most of the pubs/clubs have kids entertainment every night. We have at least one day at the fair, then go out every other night.

If you went for HRU then you have RJs club as well, but otherwise there are 20 or so pubs/clubs that you can drink and eat in. Lots of the site have their own bar/restaurant but anyone can use them. We like the Seagull the best, Dickies and the Tavern if we've been to the fair and Sunny Days if we want a quiet drink overlooking the sea whilst DD is playing in the park.

The supermarket is in Burnham on Sea but there is a mini market in Brean. Nearest petrol is on the way to Burnham, plus take-always etc. A short car drive gets you to Animal Farm, The Fort, Puxton Park. There is horse riding on the beach and a stables on HRU. Further away is Cheddar, Wookey Hole, Clarks Village, Bristol, Glastonbury etc.

I'm waffling now Grin. Is there anything specific you want to know?

eveninginviteonly · 23/05/2014 18:00

Thanks for all that LtEveDallas. At the moment nothing specific, but I am sure there will be something. I am contacting all the sites you have suggested with the exception of Unity Farm.

We are going to take a trip down there and see what we think. We grew up in Brum too, but both our childhood holidays were to South Wales. However, for nipping back and forth at the weekend Wales is not ideal. At the moment my heart is saying South Wales but my head is saying Somerset.

We have also been looking at the area between Brean and Minehead, particularly Watchet and the Blue Anchor bay area. Do you know much about these?? I will have to start another thread covering those areas as I forgot to put them in the title.

A friend who has got a caravan at Haven in Burnham on Sea goes there most weekends and pointed out that it makes it easier to take day trips further South, so that makes it more appealing. I think we would be quite limited in Wales.

Of course, should I win the lottery this weekend, the dilemma will be on which Caribbean island to purchase my villa Smile

Try Yellowsands Holiday Parks, www.breanbeach.co.uk
they have some caravans for sale in Brean

eveninginviteonly · 24/05/2014 18:33

LtEveDallas - Can you describe where the entrance to Skoorbland actually as I can't find it. Found Notham Farm and Seagull Pub on google streetview but not the entrance for Skoorbland. Thanks

Sorry evening, only just got a signal. Skoorbland is the 2nd site to the right of The Seagull Inn. On the same side of the road, 3 Acres caravan Park is next door (with Scottys Bar) Skoorbland is next, then Golden Sands I think (owned by HRU). There is a sign on the gate with a phone number saying that there is a caravan for sale. The owner is called Brian.

eveninginviteonly · 29/05/2014 19:44

Thanks for that LtEveDallas. We have now visited the area and it is not really what we are looking for, which is a shame as it is so close.
We have now decided to focus on the South Coast in Sidmouth area as it is only two hours away.
Many thanks for your help and I hope you enjoyed your weekend.
