We (partner, baby and in-laws) are planning a two week holiday to Scotland this summer. I know next to nothing about where to visit, I've had a look online but would like any suggestions on how to make the most of our 2 weeks.
DP is into photography, FiL likes golf and whiskey and MiL is into arts and crafts type stuff. I'd like to get in a couple of nice walks and maybe a beach if we're lucky with the weather.
I was thinking the west coast, doing a whiskey tour somewhere, driving up to Oban or something and then driving over to Edinburgh for a day or two at the end of the holiday.
Any suggestions very welcome, thanks.

West coast is, IMHO, far more beautiful. I'd travel up and maybe go to Lewis and Harris for a couple of nights, and maybe to Skye. The commonwealth games are in in Glasgow from 23 July until the start of August, so accommodation anywhere near is almost impossible to find. Likewise, the Edinburgh festival in august kebabs it's at a premium there too.

What are your dates?

Ditto above really. Skye is amazing and Waternish peninsula got lots of wee art galleries and there's a wool dyer there too. Waternish and Trotternish are the most attractive peninsulas (I think...my opinion only so no complaints from others please., especially for photography (see my bad phone pics below) and Waternish fab for crafts. Whiskey distillery on island too. There is a golf course but it's not our thing so I can't comment on it! Harris beautiful and has the wildest golf course I've seen but if you've only got a fortnight you're maybe going to end up whizzing through places rather than really seeing them if you try and fit in too much. Anyway..you can get the ferry from Uig on Skye if you want to nip over and its on the Trotternish peninsula so it could all be tied in.

West coast beaches are fab. Arisaig up to Mallaig is a coast road and is pretty much one awesome beach after another!
Edinburgh at the festival is a must if you're here at that time.

Thanks so much for the tips, I hadn't even connected the dots on the Commonwealth games being on in Glasgow this summer at about the same time!

I've just reread my post and there's a random "kebabs" in it! No idea what word was autocorrected to that Hmm

You need to visit St Andrews, it has golf, artsy crafty stuff AND beaches! Fife in General is lovely - and far less midges than the west coast!

Think we'll have to go for a month at this rate :). Thanks for all the tips, getting very excited about the hol. Is the Jacobite railway worth the money? It looks amazing.

I loved the Jacobite steam train but you do need to book well in advance

helensburgh · 21/05/2014 22:03

Skye is fab as is the wester Ross area.

Dumfries and Galloway is great, beaches, forests, castles lochs, walks. Etx etc

AndiPandi · 21/05/2014 22:05

Ooooh also try and get up to Plockton or Poolewe on west coast - they have palm trees!!! Their own little micro climate it is very beautiful

Love the West Coast - Ardnamurchan for me.

Just want to say don't spend too much time in the car, especially with a little one! Remember it can take a lot longer to travel on single track roads, and more concentration if you're not used to them.
