Can anyone recommend a hotel in Rome?

We are a family for four: kids are 8 and 11.

We are in Rome for 6 nights in July/August.

We have been looking at lots of different hotels. Hotel Artemide has been the best at responding to questions so far. But I was not sure whether this would be noisy as it is on a main road.

We have also looked at Fortyseven (but I noticed quite a few complaints on TA from people not being able to access the restaurant because of private functions). I wondered if this was a bit out of things.

We have also looked at Capo d'Africa, the Albergo del Senato, Hotel Lord Byron , Teatro Pace and the Babuino 181 (although this was very expensive).

I just don't know what to choose!

We want somewhere comfortable with good services e.g. bar, restaurant (our eldest son is autistic) and near to the tourist sites.

We don't mind a bit of noise if we are near to the sites but wouldn't want to be stuck on a main road with traffic noise and then still have to walk distances to get anywhere of an evening.

Also, is it best to book up now or wait to see if there are any offers? We have booked flights.

Any help appreciated.

We are just back from Rome and stayed at the Alrovandi Villa Borgese. Not cheap! But fantastic! It is situated just outside the city walls and is a short (10 min) drive in the courtesy bus which leaves the hotel every 1/2 hour to just above the Spanish Steps. The bus runs all day with last pick from the city at 10.45 pm. The huge benefit of this hotel is the fact that it has an outside pool set in beautiful gardens which is very rare in Rome so it is an oasis to come back to every day to escape the heat. The Byron is close by but no little restaurants so you do need to travel into the the more touristy bits unless you want to eat in the hotel. It is directly opposite the Borgese gardens so you can walk through them to reach the city walls or the hotel has pedal bikes too. Can't recommend this hotel enough.

We've also recently been to Rome but stayed in a airbnb apartment, right in the middle of everything, no buses or taxis required and restaurants on the doorstep but quiet too. It was brilliant. However if you want a hotel, that it is not.

We used a tour guide (walking) to help engage the kids in the history of Rome and she was really good with lots of interesting facts and stories to help maintain their interest. I don't think she was expensive either for what she did.

We stayed in the artemede. Not noisy at all. Really central. Great breakfast buffet and rooms were large. Loved it. They couldnt do enough for us.

We stayed at the Albergo del senato a few years ago. We liked the location (we could see the Pantheon from our room) and they were very friendly and hospitable. Our children had a large room which slept 3 very comfortably. We could walk everywhere. When you go to visit the Colisseum etc take your passports to prove you are from the EU & entry is cheaper.

If you can get a hotel with a pool I would definitely do that. Rome is very hot in August. It's low season as all the Italian go to the beach for the summer, so you should be able to get a good price but if you have specific needs I would book ahead to make sure you get exactly what you want.
