Childrens food at Festivals

To help with Uni project, can anyone shed some light on what food preference they have for kids (age range 3-12) at family festivals? What do you look for? Would you still take a picnic if you had a weekend ticket/camping overnight? Would you choose a healthy option if it were available?
All info very helpful - thank you!

I'm taking my children to Glastonbury this year. Took DD1 a few years ago when she was tiny and remember macaroni cheese being a fab find in the kidz field cafe. My DDs are not adventurous eaters (...yet, fingers crossed) so I'm imagining pizza/jacket pots with beans/veggie burgers mainly. We will definitely buy a lot from the fresh fruit stalls. We will take a small amount from home to save money (mainly for snacks). We don't mind treating them to a bit of junk as it is a break from the norm but if healthy options are available we will definitely buy them. I bet an 'Annabel Karmel' style food van would be swamped Grin

We like things like falafel, houmous and salad. Also likely to go for nice organic burger/hotdog stall. Or curry. Would not take a picnic, would take snacks and drinks for toddler everything else buy there.
We eat lots when at festivals. Won't be doing any this year but used to.

Friend and I took our girls to two Camp Bestivals in a row, her youngest aged 4 then 5 and the other two 7 then 8.

We took picnics for tea on the Thursday (set-up day) both years, and one for Friday lunchtime the first year (didn't bother the following year).

What worked well:

Pizza Express the first year, pizzas are a good size for kids.
Wagamama the second year - small selection of food, but they were okay with customising (mini katsu chicken curry without the curry for DD). They had a big area with cushions, seating, swings, DJs, so it was a great experience in it's own right.
Bought packed lunch the second year - nice filled roll, fruit, yogurt and a brownie. Not too worthy, but did contain fruit. My DD's quote fussy so without an option like this tends to end up eating chips.
Chips - well, it is supposed to be fun!
Actual kids' meals - sausage, chips and beans. Not the most exciting, but a good price and portion size.

What was okay: sandwiches from the WI.

What wasn't so good: pizza the second year; they were of a size that would feed two kids, not three, but two pizzas would have been expensive and too much. Hazard of having three kids with us, and an extension of what we get sometimes as a one-child family.

So what I reckon would be good is:

  • lunch options for kids - as an adult I can handle eating something hot and substantial like a burrito for lunch, but young kids often prefer normal sandwiches and the like
  • kids' meals that aren't something and chips, and if it's pizza actually have kid-sized pizza (also good for lighter adult lunches)
