i had terrible reaction on this, had about 6 lots, cos doc told me that things would settle down, they didnt. i put on 2 stone and bled intermitently... awful thing, would never go back on it.

I did really well on this for the first 2 times, no bleeding at all, felt fab but after that (took it 5 or 6 times) and began to get really depressed which I think was a hormonal thing. Ended up with depression illnesses like headaches, tiredness etc. Not a good way to mess with my hormones so I stopped it a year before ttc.

Again, this is progesten-based contraception.

MANY women are sensitive to this synthetic hormone, which mimics androgens in the body.

The GYN at the FPC completely ruled it out for me as I have been treated for PND.

At the women's clinic I worked at in the US, the docs would only give it to women who had completed their families and needed birth control their husbands wouldn't find out about - many were from cultures where birth control is frowned upon.

That's really interesting about the depression because I found I regularly had crying fits, much like when I was later pg. I also had either reduced sex drive or vaginal dryness, I'm not sure (chicken and egg? LOL.)
I also puke with the morning after pill and well, pregnancy so although I'm thinking of trying the minipill until DH gives in re snip I'm just not sure I can tolerate the progesterone. (I get migraines so can't take the combined pill.)

Yes I had it, first time fab no problems at all. 2nd jab fine to begin with and then I bled for about 6 weeks in a row went back to fpc and told them I didn't want the booster and they agreed, that was just over a week ago and I am still bleeding. I have been told it could take months for everything to settle down.

I have been on the injection and I say don't go on it if possible. It messes your system up to the hills and takes quite a while if u want to conceive again. (2-5 years) The pill if any is best (cilest).

Flossam · 25/08/2006 20:53

Lots of threads on this. Several people on here have had probs. Personally I would avoid it like the plague. If I had had the problems I have had recently while on this I am quite certain I wouldn't be here now. Overdramatic maybe but I am saying it because I believe it to be true.

Charleesunnysunsun · 25/08/2006 20:58

I had 2 yrs of hell with the contraceptive injection, i only had 1 and i bled non stop for 2 yrs. I was told its because it seeps into your muscles that when you use them a little more is released each time causing a prolonged effect.

TBH i really belived i had been made infertile from it after having problems for so long but thankfull after 2 yrs it stopped and i was ok, but i know some women who used it for yrs and were left infertile. That was depo poreva 3 monthly injection i have known loads of people that have used another brand with no problems what so ever.

beansprout · 25/08/2006 20:58

I wasn't told that it would take up to a year for my periods to return. Apparently it really shouldn't be recommended to women who would like to have more children.

I would go back to your GP as one of the benefits is supposed to be that your periods stop (mine did).

I had depo provera and had really bad mood swings also didn't bleed for months then bled fro weeks ended up back on the pill. Didn't affect fertility though.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 25/08/2006 21:56

I had Depo provera and was warned it could take a year to get my periods back after it was out of my system. Luckily I stopped well in advance of ttc but it was also no fun waiting for them to return (13m in my case), was convinced I was infertile.
God why is there still such a sh*t range of options in this day and age?

Hattie05 · 25/08/2006 21:59

I too had the depo - i used it for about four years and had not problems at all - loved not having periods. Decided we wanted to ttc in about a years time so stopped and fell pg immediately!

BUT made the mistake of going back on it after having dd and for some reason it just no longer agreed with me - i put on loads of weight and then had to wait a year and a half for periods to come back - even then needed some artificial help from doc.

themoon66 · 25/08/2006 22:16

God, am so glad I found this thread. I was thinking of having this, but my biggest worry is bleeding for a long period and putting on weight.

Am not going to even consider it any more. It sounds horrendous.

Snozcumber · 25/08/2006 22:57

I had the injection for nearly six years. Loved it whilst on no side effects, periods or anything.

Then was told your supposed to have regular breaks so can off it and it took 18 months for my periods and fertility to return.

Would never go back on it or recommend it to anyone, the 18 months were horrendous with the hormone fluctuations.

PinkTulips · 25/08/2006 23:03

my best friend had this last year... 3 month long period apparently a small amount of women have a reaction to the injection which causes this, get down to a doctor and they can give you medication to stop it.

I was on the injections for quite a while I had no periods, but I put on a bit of weight ( not all down to the ijections perhaps) and migraines but again probably not all down to the injections.

Periods went back to normal fairly quickly and I got pregnant pretty quick too.
