Croatia itinerary suggestions

TerrysNo2 · 07/04/2014 10:27

I have booked flights into Split for 2 weeks in August. We definitely want to spend a couple of days visiting Plitvice Lakes but apart from that the world is our lobster.

Can anyone suggest an itinerary or some must visit places. We probably want to stay in 2 other places as we don't want to move about too much with our DC who are 2 and 5.

Thanks

Marking my place, we're going to Croatia too, though mostly staying in the hotel, but would be nice to know suggestions for day trips etc.

We went to Croatia a few years ago. The Plitvice lakes are beautiful, we spent 2 days there and absolutely loved it. Best to set off early on your walk because it does get busy with coach trips and the choice of food isn't that great. Those were the only down points for us. We also visited Zadar for a few days, bit more of a relaxing, sunbathing part of our holiday and it was great to experience the sea organ, I'd love to go back there actually. We didn't have a chance to go across to any of the islands but they are easy to get to from Split so probably ideal for day trips.

Split is the port from which the boats leave for the islands. There are day trips a plenty to be had. Try going to Hvar and renting a small boat with an outboard motor to visit the nearby islands. One of the closest ones had nude swimming (which utterly entranced 4 year old DD). Soltar, Vis and Brac are also worth a day trip.

Trogir is a local bus ride away. For the Dr Who fans, the episode with the vampires was filmed there.

The one sandy beach in Split is fantastic for families. It gets crowded, but there is practically no tide and it stays shallow a long way out. DD would happily get involved in long sand castle construction projects with children speaking a dozen languages.

Krka is a day trip on a bus. A beautiful forested area with river pools to swim in.

We booked a river kyaking day in the tourist information bureau in the centre of Split. We were picked up early in the morning, driven out to the river, provided with kyaks, life jackets etc, then at the end we were provided with a picnic and toys for the children (badminton stuff, some balls etc) It was a great day, we made friends with some English speaking Croats with children around DD's age and ended up walking to a local horse riding centre for a talk to the animals before being taken back home.

Take shoes to wear in the sea. Apart from the one sandy beach, the shore is all rocky. However, there's not much of a tide, the water is warm and there's not much in the way of waves.

If you are making it a two or three centre holiday you absolutely must visit Dubrovnik. It is known as the pearl of the Adriatic and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The old town is beautiful and is completely surrounded by fortified walls. You can walk round the walls and enjoy some stunning views of the city.

Dubrovnik a must! Also, Lopud island is lovely Smile

We spent a week on Brac last summer. We rented a villa with a pool. Lovely. We took a boat trip to Hvar, which was even nicer, but quite a long trip, as you had to go from Bol (an hour from our villa) and Hvar town is right on the South side of the island, so nearly two hours by boat.
