Does anyone else ... [embarassing confession]

... put their baby to sleep in odd places?

DS1 used to always get put to sleep in the bathtub or bathroom when we were travelling, as that way we'd still have the main room to ourselves in the evening. We'd often just put the travel cot mattress in the bathtub, and he'd sleep beautifully, particularly before he could get out of the tub. Ok, it was a bit weird having to pee quietly, but whatever, it worked.

Bathrooms also often don't have outside windows, so they're quieter, and not so light as regular bedrooms.

Does anyone else do this? Or is it gross and wrong?

Oh, we've also had them sleep in closets, sometimes, when travelling.

Absolutely not! We had a night away in a hotel a year or so ago ago and I wish I'd thought of that!! Dd sleeps in the first aid stretcher at the lifeguard unit when we're at the beach and we bath her in a plastic box.

Surfermum · 15/08/2006 18:07

That's absolutely not gross and wrong btw.

It does work fine. I worry about ventilation, and hygiene and so on, but we've done it in a lot of accommodation, and been v happy with it.

I hate the idea of putting the kids down and then being stuck sitting in the dark, listening to them breathe, for several hours.

Exactly, or wake up and disturb the wine tasting.

Oh, DS2 is currently 22 months, but sleeping in the bathroom. And DS1 is nearly 5, but slept in the bathtub (with sleeping bags etc) the night before last. They're never too old to be put in funny places to sleep, if it makes life easier for me!

seriously...is this a joke? Confused

NotQuiteCockney · 16/08/2006 11:39

Nope. Not at all.

Never done this but wish I had your lateral thinking skills NQC. Have certainly spent time in darkened hotel rooms furiously resenting my offspring that's for sure

bluejelly · 16/08/2006 11:45

I think it's a cunning plan.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/08/2006 11:45

Ah, I've never done that, Marina. I don't know whether it's me or DH who thought of doing this first, frankly - I'm pretty sure we did it on our first or second trip with DS1.

Dd slept in a closet for several months. It was off our bedroom and the darkest place in the flat and acted as a sort of half way house for moving into her own room. we've done babies in bathrooms too - in fact ds2 will be sleeping in the bathroom in a travel cot when we go to Wales next week.

fairyjay · 16/08/2006 11:45

Certainly put travel cots in the bathroom before now!

NotQuiteCockney · 16/08/2006 11:46

Ah, glad to hear we're not the only ones.

I think DS1 is maybe too old for sleeping in bathrooms. At least, he was disturbed by the whole thing, night before last, kept being convinced the tap was about to drip on his head, etc etc. I think we'll either have to give up on that idea, or start selling it, in advance, as an adventure.

Great idea. Will think of that the next time we stay anywhere.

I've made up 'nests' on floors for both kids but didn't think of the bath. Top tip

IdrisTheDragon · 16/08/2006 11:51

I wish we'd thought of that before.

Have ended up with DH and me reading in the bathroom with DS asleep in the bedroom .

Marina · 16/08/2006 11:54

Well, I think NQC nicked the idea off the Chuckle Brothers, where they "hilariously" time-shared their only B & B room by putting a grown adult to sleep in the bath without her waking up (she appeared to have left her tights and shoes on too).

Bozza · 16/08/2006 11:55

Think that is a good idea for a younger child but not so good at 5 as you maybe discovered. I know travel cot in the bathroom has been suggested in the past.

We went to Edinburgh in May and stayed in a travel inn. Ours were 5 and just 2. We let them stay up late - for them ie about 8-8.30 - read them a shared story and then put them to bed in the single bed thing and cot. Then we just laid on the bed and read until they nodded off - 10 minutes or so. After that we had wine and played scrabble with the lights on etc no problem.

Guess it depends on how your child sleeps. Had quite a few problems last summer in France with 13mo DD. Am not envisaging them next week though.

Have put travel cots in the bathrooms & also a walk in closet once too. I have used bed spreads as extra curtains & divided rooms with strange furniture arrangements, such as the wardrobe & dressing table in the middle of the room too! I would have done pretty much anything when my two were younger to try and ensure a decent night's sleep while away from home! Not gross or wrong - just survival!!!!

zookeeper · 16/08/2006 12:03

bath sounds a top idea - plug out I presume..
