Long haul in September with toddler and baby- where would you go?

We did a lot of long haul travelling pre-children and I really miss it, so am idly wondering if we could put something together that wouldn't be traumatic or completely break the bank.

By the time we would go, we would have a toddler who would need a seat and an under six month old. Not really fussed about beaches to lie on and preference would be east rather than west- have liked Borneo, Singapore, hong kong amongst other places in the past. Toying with the idea of Ho Chi Min, but not sure with children?

Any ideas gratefully received Smile

Out of interest Artandco where are you getting these figures from? I can't imagine they are correct for Crete for example in August, but may be right for Chalkidiki for example in September. However this is quite a difference between southern Greece and northern Greece.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 05/03/2014 10:58

Maximum of 30 in Greece in August. That's rubbish, I have been mainland 5 times, kos and Corfu in August and it's got above that each time.

Bornin1984 · 05/03/2014 11:04

Off the topic but...... I went to Turkey 2 years a go in agust and it was 46 in the day and 35 at night

Artandco · 05/03/2014 11:46

Ok it's rubbish if you think. We go to hydra and kos throughout the year to visit pil/ mil/ family. I can't say I have every eaten a meal outside in the evening without a cardigan, and I always change the children from shorts into chinos/ jumper for the eve as they are frozen without. Cold winds in the day often on beaches even if higher temp

In comparison when in Oman in sept/ oct it was late 30s at 10pm with everyone enjoying evening swims. And mid 40s in the day.

Bunbaker · 05/03/2014 13:13

"That means it gets colder, and 21 degrees in the eve is freezing to me. Do you just read the parts of a post you want to see?"

I would love to have 21 degrees in the evening Grin

Artandco · 05/03/2014 13:27

It's 21 degrees in my house right now and I'm frozen. Wearing winter things

We discounted Borneo this year due to high malaria risk and our DS is nearly 7. I would stick to somewhere safer from a health perspective such as US, Australia, Singapore, Canada etc.

bonvivant · 05/03/2014 14:13

I'd add that we did Australia when DS was 2 - it was far easier to do it with him at that age than it would be now. I wouldn't at all be put off by long haul with young children.

Booboostoo · 05/03/2014 17:35

I am Greek and have spent 41 summers in Greece. This summer I shall have the pleasure of spending August in Athens nine months pregnant - if it's 21 degrees at any time of the night or day it will be the biggest miracle I've ever experienced in Greece!

The Op will be taking a baby under 6 months whom I assume wont have completed all of the initial jabs needed. everyone else who is in favour of her travelling a long way had children older than this. babies are hardy little things. I travel light, and have travelled with my kids but not at this age. I just read the post and thought that the OP might have an unrealistic expectation as to how much fun a holiday with a puking 4/5 month old with diarrhoea might be or a howling toddler who hates flying. if you took a straw poll on MN the majority would agree. I hope the Op has a great time wherever they go. but, as I said up thread, personally I would just wait until they were a little older.

Artandco · 06/03/2014 19:31

Mummy - we took youngest at 4 months to Vietnam. Eldest had been to South Africa, New York, and Oman before he went to Vietnam at 18 months. We travel light still. Just x2 small hiking bags to Vietnam. No puking/ diarrhoea

bonvivant · 06/03/2014 19:57

Most people don't venture outside of the standard 2 week beach break but if you're into travel as opposed to being into holidays (and there is a difference IMO), why should that necessarily be put on hold for x years?

We've 'adapted' rather than put on hold and it's worked very well for us.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 06/03/2014 20:22

I put long haul travelling on hold until DS3 turned 5, it felt right for us as a family. Now my DC may only have a couple of years left of coming with us on our adventures and I'm looking forward to visiting new places with my DH. I don't think there is a right or wrong way of doing things but I don't regret a penny of the money I have spent showing my DC some of the amazing places we have been to.

NK5BM3 · 06/03/2014 20:35

Singapore! If you've been then you know what it's like. Kid friendly. My kids have traveled long haul since they were 4/6 months. They are now 3/6 years and we do it every year. It's fine.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 06/03/2014 20:39

I'd say Singapore again. Cape Town would also be good as only an hours time difference. No difference at all IIRC if you time it right!
