I noticed this on my way to work this morning (in the Rotunda) - does anybody know anything about it? is it a chain? Has anybody been?

Just curious really

Hi, Just responding to your query on Cafe au Play which I have just found after having 5 mins to browse. I am the owner, it is not a chain, but an independent coffee shop inspired from many years of trying to do coffee with two young children in tow. We are a coffee shop which also provides a large unsupervised wooden toy play area, primarily for 0-6 year olds, although we also keep a few wooden games behind the bar for the older ones. We welcome mums, dads, grandparents, nannies with children in tow and sell delicious fairtrade coffee, organic juices, handmade cakes, snacks (full and half portions), organic hot childrens meals. It is fully air conditioned with clean modern facilities inc. baby changing area. Our aim is to provide great coffee in a relaxed cosy environnment for both parents and children. If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

wheelybug · 09/09/2006 16:38

ooh I drove passed this today and wondered what it was !

I know this is really old, does anyone know if this is still open? I live away from Kingston but am meeting a friend halfway and thought this sounded good!?

TheHouseofMirth · 29/12/2009 19:37

I haven't been there for ages but think it's still open. It's not fantastic, in fact a bit of a wasted opportunity. The food is OK. There aren't many toys but enough to keep children occupied while you have a coffee. The best thing is that the play area is large and open so you really can relax and not have to keep much of an eye out. If it isn't open I have to say the cafe at the back of Milletts is quite child-friendly. Food is expensive and reminiscent of British Home Stores(!) but it has a tent for them to ply in and quite a few toys.

girlsyearapart · 29/12/2009 19:46

nope it has closed down now. Think it is going to become a tesco.

TheHouseofMirth · 30/12/2009 05:15

I'm not surprised. I thought the concept was good but the execution was pretty poor. What did you think of it?

girlsyearapart · 30/12/2009 07:27

When it first opened I liked it but as time when on it got dirtier and dirtier, toys never replaced, baby changing area stank and was filthy.

also prices of food went up but quality went down imo.

Shame it has closed though- I hardly ever take the dds to Kingston now it is just too stressful!

Nearest play cafe is Hampton now I think which is ok if a bit small but doesnt have the shops that KIngston does.

Watch this space. A similar concept coming to the Epsom area soon...

Hiya, a new play cafe is opening soon in the same unit in Kingston. Very reasonable food and drink prices and LOTS of new and clean play equipment.

any more details of alternative indoor play cafes now that cafe au play in kingston has closed? As rubbish as it was I really miss it, especially with all this rain!

jellybugs · 20/11/2010 21:22

Hi there,

Just to let you know that Jellybugs play cafe is opening in The Rotunda in Kingston, 29th November.
