Yorkshire Brick Show 22/23 February (LEGO)

you children (or you) love LEGO then head to the Yorkshire Brick Show being held at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield on the 22nd and 23rd of February.

Entry to both the museum and LEGO displays is completely free so ideal in these tough economic times. It's not just displays to look at though, there is a large play area filled with LEGO.

I'll be there working on the Fairy Bricks display as we live build a Tower Bridge containing over 4000 parts. Apparently it's a favourite of David Beckham and we have another one to give away as part of a raffle to raise funds for a Wakefield hospital.

It should be a fun day out for all the family so please join us. If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Is it first come first served for underground tours do you know?

Looks like you book yourself in on arrival to secure you're slot. If you really want a definite time it can be booked prior to arrival but there is a fee of £5. Full details here.

Did anyone go to this yestereday?

It sounds like it was chaos, big queues, people being turned away. We were planning on going today and just wondered if it was worth it?

Kevbags, hope you raised lots of money. We went today but walked away after learning the museum was full. Cars all over the road. We were told 3 hour queue to get into actual museum. Went to Xscape and played crazy golf instead.

First of all huge thanks to everyone who attended and bought a raffle ticket. We managed raise nearly £1100 and it should hit that when we are done counting pound coins! So not only will Pinderfields in Wakefield benefit but also two other UK hospitals.

There were some issues with congestion and that can't be denied. This was the first holding of a LEGO event at the museum so no one really knew how it would go. An average half term weekend attendance to the museum is 750 per day. There were over 3500 there on Saturday. Museum staff worked as hard as possible to keep things flowing and on Sunday it was a little better but long ques did still remain. Thankfully the vast majority, over 95% I would say had an amazing time and we're pleased they did stand in line. The museum and show organisation tried to keep everyone updated via social media of the current wait time situation and could be seen regularly walking the long line to make sure people knew what was happening.

Lessons will be learned for next year but despite everything when an event proves massively popular all anyone can do is their best and I honestly feel that did happen over the weekend. There could have been a venue capable of holding 10,000 people but if 15,000 turn up the same problem happens.

We didn't get there as DD wasn't well. I'm glad it was a success. Which other hospitals benefitted?

We have a waiting list of hospitals and a couple will be selected over the next week or so. It isn't necessarily a next cab off the rank situation with more factors involved but in our eyes children are children no matter where they are patients.

Having the show over half term would be wonderful bit unfortunately I can't ever see it happening. Everyone displaying does so at considerable cost of both time and money and unfortunately everyone was back to work on Monday. At a stretch a Friday could possibly be added but that's another night of hotels for many people and associated expenses. Another option is a bigger venue but then it couldn't be offered free of charge and it becomes a financial risk. When everyone is a volunteer, taking that risk is a massive thing for the group or individuals to take on.

Can I suggest the children's hospital in Sheffield as they are undergoing a major refurbishment scheme right now and need loads of donations.

I must admit that they are my charity of choice because without them we wouldn't have DD.

That's a great recommendation and it will be added to our radar. However it wouldn't come in this donation phase as we visited Sheffield as a city back I'm December when donating to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice. One for later in the year though :-)

Just delivered £800 worth of stuff to Pinderfields. Staff took pictures and will follow in due course but met a wee boy, 18 months old, both legs in traction and he couldn't care less. He had a new Duplo racing car and that's all that mattered to him. Days like today make it all worthwhile :-)
