Anyone been to GLASGOW SCIENCE CENTRE?

Thinking about going tomorrow if the rain persists.

I will have my 2 DDs (6 and almost 5), DD1's friend (also 6) and DS (3).

Never been but have heard good things about it. Anyone been recently and do you think it will be OK for the 3 year old?

Also, is there anywhere to have a picnic? If not, what is the cafe like?

Thanks

Gillain, we have been quite a few times. Its not cheap - check on the wesite but I think its about £7 for the kids, so it would be an expensive day out for you with 4 kids.

Would you be on your own with the kids? You would be much better with more adults - most of the exhibits need an adult to explain it / read it out etc. We have a 6yo who is a very good reader and it still takes one of us to help her and the other to watch the toddler and the baby IYSWIM.

Sorry have not tried the cafe

I think that 6 6 4 and 3 is probably to young to make it worthwhile. What about the Transport Museam or the new Kelvingrove? And they are FREE!!!!!!

Thanks, Kristina.

Was thinking about Transport Museum. Worried that Kelvingrove will still be hectic.

I have a voucher for a free child at the Science centre so not too worried about the cost. More concerned that they would be too young.

3 yr old will enjoy it but won't give the other 3 much of a chance to try stuff out perhaps, not the same concentration span .

We were there last week, the new Alice through the looking glass exhibits on the top floor are good. TBH the 3 older ones will love it all.

The "Flame on" show is really good (3yr old might be a bit scared as the lights go down and big bangs), go to the earliest show as they get busy later on,

There are work shops and shows all day, if you want to do the work shops put hte kids names down for the afternoon ones and go to the morning shows as you will have to queue for them.

Bubble work shop was a bit tame even for the 6 yr 5 yr olds, you could do more adventurous stuff in the garden.

Photography work shop will be to complicated for 3 yr old and the 5/6 yr olds will need help so no good if you are the only adult.

No indoor areas for picnicing, cafe is OK, hot food turns into cold food by the time you get past the till, there is a pick and mix kids meal bag with cheese rolls and stuff. plenty choice of sandwiches, crisps etc.

I would also suggest the transport museum and the Kelvingrove being free is always a bonus. Very close so one in the morning and one in the afternoon, if it is dry picnic in the park beside the Kelvingrove.

I would save the money and just take the older 2 to the science museum or at least when you don't have another kid as well. I hope you will have help, so many things to see at any of these places, I only have 2 but they go of in opposite directions. Have fun .

Kelvingrove isn't unbearably busy, we were there the second saturday it was reopened and it was OK, they had stewards in to control the queuing, but after the first week they didn't have much to do.

I think they are a bit too young

Transport museum is fab and free and has some of the Balamory vehicles.

Not wishing to blow my 3 year old's trumpet, but he is very inquisitive and quite attentive for his age

We are going to give it a try. DH is coming too and if needs be, he can go off with DS while I take the girls.

Skribble, do the workshops cost extra? How do you sign up? Is there a central "signing up" place or do you have to go round and find them individually?

Will try not to think about the cost... Actually DD1 has been out a few times with this friend and they have been very good to her. I don't grudge taking her.

Probably too late for you, but yes the workshops are free, The info board near the front desk tells you which ones you have to sign up for. There are sheets of paper up where the workshops will run to put names on. I left DH with the kids while I charged around putting names down everywhere.

Well we went and had a great time. Actually I think DH and I had the best time!

I don't think they "got" it all, and there was so much we didn't see, but they certainly had fun exploring. We did the bubbles workshop and Snap Happy. Also saw the Flame On show which they enjoyed. They all loved the Alice exhibit.

We did lunch in the cafe, well actually sat outside. It was a bit overpriced, as these things usually are, but good enough.

We will definitely go back, perhaps in a few months.
