Does anyone have any experience of eating out in Italy as a wheat intolerant person? Considering Italy for villa holiday so can self cater too, but would eating out be possible? It's a cuisine I tend to avoid in this country, let alone its origin!

Absolutely possible. Yes, there'll be lots of pizza and pasta on offer, but loads of salads and meats too.

I have heard that actually Italy is very geared up to those with wheat intolerance - which seems very odd, given when I've mentioned this is France and Spain I've been looked at like: are you having a frigging laugh?

I came across this blog and this one - I think you should be fine. Hope so!

Wow, thanks for the blog links - the food sounds amazing! Sadly we've decided to postpone our Italy trip until next year, but I'm definitely looking forward to the eating part of it now :)

When you go just go for the "Secondo" part of the menu with the "contorno"(side dish). Italian restaurant meals are generally the first course which is pasta, rice followed by the second course of meat, fish, veg with a side dish of veg. An antipasto followed by a Secondo and contorno is a filling meal and usually wheat free.
