What are they like? What nationality goes? Which are recommended? what is the accommodation like? How easy are they to self cater? Our age range is 7 and 3. Would this suit us?

We've done a couple. We've found a mixture of French, German and Dutch with relatively few Brits. Accommodation is variable but clean and fresh if basic (kitchen not that well equipped for example) , try to book at least one size up from the number in your party though as otherwise it may feel cramped when in the living area. One resort we went to was quite spread out so bikes (which you can hire) are an advantage in getting around as we were some distance from the main hub -indoor pool, restaurant , shop, kids club etc. The other one we went to wasn't a P and V complex as such , there were also privately owned holiday homes within the same area and it felt more part of the local town and didn't have onsite shop etc.

Which one was the one which felt more like part of a town?

Port Guillaume. There is a small harbour there which had some nice eateries, a few shops and the beach/prom was less than 10 minutes away. You could buy fresh fish and seafood at the nearby fish market too. Indoor pool let it down though , very small and noisy.

We went to one in Normandy soon after it opened - it was a spa resort and very, very nice I think it was in houlgate and looked exactly as it does in the pictures. Only downside was the weather not great. Cap esterel was recommended to us by a friend.

We went to the Restanques de St Tropez once. It was vastly overpriced for what it was. The pool complex was nice and dd quite liked the kids club. But she does speak french. The shop was poor, there was no atmosphere in the evening.

We stayed at Le Green beach last summer. Agree with previous posters that the places were quite small and functional rather than luxurious, but it worked well for us. The ds's took golf lessons, we visited the d day landings sites, ate out and the children swam in the pool.
