Hong Kong for 3 days, alone, what to do??

Hi Wise Members
I am going to China for work in March and have decided to tag a few days on at the end to go to HK. I'll be alone, but will have 3 days and I hope a lot of fun! I know ZILCH about this part of the world. What would be your 'must do' activities?
And any tips for a decent hotel?

thanks!

You will have a great time. If you are there during a festival I would reccomend going along. I'm not an expert but a quick Google came up with this one on 13 March www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/see-do/events-festivals/chinese-festivals/hung-shing-festival.jsp

What sort of thing are you interested in doing?

You'll have a great time! I went to Hong Kong by myself and loved it! While I was there I really enjoyed:
going up to Victoria Peak
watching the laser/ light show over the skyline
visiting Nan Lian gardens which were just beautiful
going to Lantau Island and getting cable car up to see the Big Buddha
going to the night market in Kowloon

It was a couple of years ago now so I hope I've got the place names right but I can double check if you want to know more about any of it.

OOh yes please Ruined, any help is welcome. I think I should go and buy a guidebook asap!
thanks

Well, amazingly it seems I did get those places right!

I took the tram up to Victoria Peak but I think you can walk up if you're feeling energetic. Great views over the city and harbour on a clear day.

The laser show is called the Symphony of Lights - not sure if it's on every evening or just some. I got the Star Ferry over to Kowloon to see it and the view of the skyline from the Kowloon side is pretty incredible, especially at night.

To get to Lantau island, I got the train out to Tung Chung and then I took the Ngong Ping Cable Car. It's quite touristy round the Big Buddha itself but if you go on to the the Po Lin monastery and the wisdom path walk it's lovely and very peaceful.

A guidebook would definitely have more info on all those places. I didn't have one as I was only there for a few days at the start of a trip to Australia so I didn't want to cart one around the whole trip. So I just googled stuff beforehand and got a map at the airport and I was fine. I did find it tricky finding places to eat dinner though so a guidebook would
have come in handy then!

I stayed in the City Garden Hotel which was pretty nice (back in 2011 anyway!). I booked it through a travel agent so didn't really do any research into other hotels, just went with what they recommended. It wasn't the cheapest but it was in a good area, pretty central. I used the metro to travel to most places and bought an Octopus card (HK equivalent of Oyster card) for the few days I was there.

Hopefully someone else will be along soon with more suggestions! Enjoy your trip, it is a great place and I'd love to go back someday.

Lantau seconded - the Buddha is splendid, as is the lunch..
Star Ferry, the best not-very-much you'll ever spend.
tram up Victoria Peak, walk back down and around. Don't expect perfect views due to the smog but you'll still see a lot.
bonkers tourist attraction; the mid-levels escalators, going up after 1030am, again walk down.

you go over the Tsing Ma bridge on the way from the airport - couldn't see much due to dark and smog but in better conditions would be stunning.

there's a light show which you see from Kowloon side, take a radio for the soundtrack.

loads more - grab a rough guide! Don't make my mistake about climate either, HK needs warm clothes in March.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated!

We were given the walking tour booklets and maps put together by the HK Tourist Office. This was a while ago but they were a superb insight into how HK still has traditions and unique areas. We saw the fabric alleyways, apothecaries, various food shops and interesting back streets. We always felt safe. I would check out the HK Tourist office to see if they currently have something similar. We stayed at The Excelsior but I am sure any good class business hotel near to the transport systems would be good. Otherwise second everything said above.

thanky you Milly. I will check out the tourist office.
Getting excited!!

Go on the Star ferry, go up to see the views from Victoria Peak, do the mid level escalators, take the cable car up to The Big Buddha.

If you like shopping there's Stanley Market which is a bus ride from town & Ladies Market in the evenings for fake bags etc.

Enjoy, I'm jealous!

Use the underground system to get around it's clean and safe, they have. System similar to London's Oyster called Octopus

I like to wonder around the streets and markets or go to Ocean Centre for a mall experience
Take a ferry out to Cheung Chau island
Go to Aberdeen for dinner on a floating restaurant
Take the bus to Stanley
Ride the trams

Make sure your hotel is near an underground station
